Time To Take Control Over Those Food Cravings

One of my greatest problems with the control of my weight is the fact that so much self disipline is needed to achieve any tangible results. Ah, but I hear you saying, “Whats new about that” We all have that problem! Tell us something new!

Well yes we do all know that that is the biggest problem is it not. Lets face it, eating is one of life’s greatest pleasures, and we would be pretty abnormal if this was otherwise.

After all, most of us are “regular” people. How many of us stick to the perfect diet all the time, we all have our struggles with food to a greater or lesser extent. If we can recognize an awareness of this problem, and also make a point of knowing a little bit about our health, and also proper food nutrition, we are then much more likely to make wiser decisions about our choices of food.

Many people struggle with food “cravings,” and reasearch tells us that it is fairly common for food “cravings” to occur at certain times, quite often around bedtime. Your guard may be down, or you may have had an unusually hard day, and off you go on your not-so-merry way, intent on finding that tasty treat. Fatigue and stress often combine to take their toll on the best of intentions, so please don’t worry about it, rest assured you are not alone.

When food “cravings” are out of control, what started out as a bedtime snack, quickly turns into a full blown feeding frenzy…not something most of us fully understand or appreciate. We head to the kitchen and every other possible place where food can hide, quickly clearing a path as we go.
Most food cravings are not about satisfying a nutritional need or imbalance. They seem to be more emotionally related, or God forbid, are caused by plain old gluttony. Exactly why we over-indulge is not completely understood, however our knowledge about this subject continues to grow.

These Are Some Of My Thoughts On How To Control Food Cravings.

If the food isn’t available, you can’t eat it. Empty the cookie jar and keep it that way! Keep healthy food choices on-hand.

It is important to recognize the feelings and emotions that will lead to a food craving. Do you have food cravings when you’re bored, or maybe you are feeling lonely, or is it stress that is the trigger. If you can identify the trigger which leads to that craving, then you are half way to winning the battle, because you will be able to deal with the emotion that is making you desire a certain food.

Sometimes, even recognizing that a craving is about to happen doesn’t seem to help, but please do not give yourself a hard time about it, what is done is done, do not feel guilty because after all there is always tomorrow. Why not call one of your friends and share how you were feeling at that time, because it is a very good idea to make good use of your support network.

Self-control and discipline by themselves will not cut it! If you depend totally on yourself for control, you will fail. Forming caring and supportive relationships is really essential, so if you do not currently have a support network, start building one TODAY.

Get enough sleep. When you are feeling really tired, you are more likely to crave things, and with me personally, it is usually chocolate, possibly you are the same.

Never give up. When you go off the rails, do not despair, get a grip, do whatever is necessary to re-gain control, because you really must get that control back. Try to practice restraint most of the time, but do not get obsessed and un-balanced in your weight loss approach. Think moderation and not total abstinence at all times!

Exercise. This will increase the feel good endorphins that will help cut down on your cravings. Try to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. I hear so many people say that they just cannot fit in any excerise, believe me you can, we are talking about 30 minutes here, at the worst, it will mean you will have to get out of bed that bit earlier.

An early morning brisk walk will do wonders for the spirit and the soul, and will help set you up for the rest of the day!

Use moderation. Instead of stuffing yourself with every kind of food hoping that your cravings will disappear, eat 100 to 200 calories of whatever it is that you happen to be craving for at at that particular moment in time, but you must stop it at that!

Substitute with low-fat foods and complex carbs. If you’re hungry for chocolate, eat non-fat chocolate yogurt or mousse, or try fig bars or raisins for a sweet craving instead. You will be amazed at how this will help.

You must try and never skip a meal. It is much wiser to eat something if even only an apple, every three to five hours. Try six smaller meals, or regular meals with nutritious snacks in between.

Try and remember that hunger cravings are very frequently stress related. Practice other ways to cope with stress, a walk in the park for example, spiritual connections, a cozy fireplace, or even take a bath. You see, all of these stimulate neurochemicals that activate regions of the brain which increases a feeling of well being. Relaxation techniques really can be beneficial in reducing the levels of stress which you may be experiencing.

So the bottom line is to try and substitute pleasurable experiences for comfort foods.

Beware of certain medications which can stimulate your appetite. Certain drugs which are used for the treatment of depression and bipolar disorder can be appetite stimulants. Other drugs, both prescription and over the counter, may influence appetite as well. If you are on a medication and troubled by food cravings, discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist. You may well be able to find an alternative that doesn’t send your food cravings out of control.

Distract yourself. What’s that old expression…idle hands are the devils workshop, so get busy! Do anything other than give in to your desire for food, and keep doing it until the cravings subside.

One final thought for you. Take a look inside your refrigerator and kitchen cabinets and do some general “house cleaning.” Throw-out all that unhealthy stuff that is waiting to sabotage your diet, and start shopping more wisely. A little forethought and careful planning will go a long way for improving your chances of success.

One of my golden rules is that I NEVER go shopping when I am hungry! Absolutely fatal!

So to conclude, remember that control is the key, eat healthily and in moderation at all times, but do not forget that at the end of the day you are only human. If you do give in to temptation, don’t beat yourself up about it, tomorrow is another day, live long, enjoy your life, and most of all be happy!

No More Sugar & Starch with the Low Carb Diet

Made famous by a certain Doctor and his best selling books. Here is the lowdown on the low carb diet.

A brief history lesson…

A low carb diet was first documented as being used for weight loss in 1862. A Doctor (not Atkins) used it to treat a patient for an illness caused by obesity. There have been many reincarnations of it since but none have caught on like Dr Atkins.

Despite many of Dr Atkins peers at the time who disagreed if a low carb diet would work he went ahead and found that it did. He first published these findings in 1972. Twenty three years and 10 million selling diet books later, the techniques are still being used today.

How you do the low carb diet

Simply eat low carb foods instead of high ones. Low carb foods include red meat, poultry, salads, fish and cheese. High are breads, pasta, rice and cereals. See individual labels on foods and add the daily total.

  • Weeks 1 & 2 - Limit carb intake to 20 grams per day
  • Weeks 3 to Desired Weight - Add 5 to 10 grams to the daily total per week. Ensure your weight is always decreasing and lower the daily amount if it isn’t.
  • Desired Weight to Lifetime - Desired weight is now achieved so increase the final daily total by 5 grams. Then monitor your weight, if it starts to rise slightly decrease the daily total. If it starts to fall increase daily amount. You should end up with an exact number of grams of carbs you can eat each day where your weight doesn’t change. This is the “lifetime” amount.

How the the low carb diet works is not fully known and has resulted in two main theories. First is that low carb foods tend to be low in calories and it is the lower calorie intake that causes the weight loss. Second is that the level of insulin in the blood dictates how much fat is stored. Eating less carbs is said to lower the amount of insulin in the blood so the body is less inclined to store fat.

Lack of carbs in the body

The main function of carbohydrate in the body is to provide energy. When the body is short on supply it will find an alternative source. This will be from the extra fat and protein you eat to replace the carbs or if there is a calorie deficit, your body will use it’s fat stores. Many people report headaches and other symptoms in the early stages and this adjustment could be the reason.

A diet high in fats and protein has it’s own health risks. A high fat diet is known to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer. (Stephen Barrett M.D.) Too much of something is never a good thing and protein doesn’t escape either. An excess has been linked to potential kidney, bone and liver problems. (Web MD)

The low carb diet overall

The low carb diet will make you lose weight and it’s not due to fluid loss (your body adjusts by making you feel thirsty). However the problem is the body simply needs carbohydrate. Evolution still expects us to be physically active and carbs are our main source of energy.

We don’t need to forget the low carb diet approach entirely but there are now better alternatives. These include the South Beach diet and the GI diet where certain carbs are allowed and/or slowly re-introduced. These modern versions are much better nutritionally. Overall do look at the original low carb idea but move on when it comes to a long term plan.

Fat Burning Foods and Weight Loss

We all know about foods that are good for us and have various proven benefits. But many people aren’t aware that there are actually fat-burning foods, which help kick-start your body into shedding excess weight. These wonder-foods can increase the number of fat calories your body burns - they’re like little diet-helpers, stimulating your metabolism. They are known as ‘free foods’, and as you’d expect they are low in calories. However, some of them actually have ‘negative’ calories, meaning that your body burns more calories metabolising the foods than it absorbs from the food itself. Add them to your diet and see the effect for yourself!

The great news is that such ’superfoods’ contain real health benefits in addition to their amazing weight loss assisting properties. These benefits make them ideal components in any weight loss programme. You may be surprised to discover where to find some of these great little helpers.

You normally think of chilli as being found in traditionally unhealthy meals and snacks, but it contains capsaicin, an active ingredient which as a thermogenic agent helps to increase metabolism and the burning of calories and fat. Capsaicin is unsurprisingly found in many natural weight loss formulas - it is believed to be an appetite suppressant. Cayenne was shown by two Japanese studies to increase metabolism of dietary fats in women - it also showed a modest reduction in appetite. Capscaicin does even more than this - it has been shown to relieve sinusitis, psoriasis, migraines and arthritis, improve circulation and stomach conditions and even inhibit the growth of cancer cells. It also works as a good all-round painkiller.

Then there’s bee pollen - again you might associate that with unhealthiness, as bees can give a nasty sting, but their pollen is quite different. It’s a virtually complete food with an amazing composition of nutrients, enzymes and phytochemicals as well as being 40% protein. It’s meant to stimulate the metabolism as well as helping to flush fat from the body due to its high lecithin content. Pollen also makes for a good appetite suppressant, but has no negative side effects.

You still might not be shaking bee pollen over your dinner, but coconut oil is more likely to be found in your supermarket or kitchen. It’s a saturated fat, and helps to get rid of unwanted body fat, unlike polyunsaturated fats like processed vegetable oils. It really is a low-fat fat, unique from animal saturated fats with its medium chain fatty acids - these are absorbed directly and used straightaway for energy. Sufferers of diabetes, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia, digestive disorders, thyroid imbalances, and viral, bacterial and fungal infections have all found that coconut oil helps their condition.

Another ‘nasty’ natural ingredient with surprising benefits is the nettle. The stingy plant we were all told to stay away from as children contains the neurotransmitter serotonin, which calms and raises the spirits. It also functions as an appetite suppressant, as it plays a part in the feelings of fullness experienced after eating. Serotonin supplements have been designed to fight food cravings and help slimming. Decreased levels of serotonin have been found to be directly linked to overeating obesity. Nettles are reputed to improve weight loss for this reason. They’re also very mineral dense and are detoxifying and cleansing for the body - amazingly they are also great for the skin, hair and nails, thanks to their sulphur content.

Here’s the really good news - chocolate can help you lose weight! Cacao or pure chocolate contains chemicals that increase serotonin levels in the brain and suppress the appetite. Serotonin levels can be raised by the amino acid tryptophan in cacao as well as the action of monoamine oxidase enzyme inhibitors (MAO inhibitors). These decrease our body’s ability to break down serotonin so that more of this neurotransmitter remains in the brain, creating feelings of fullness for longer. Cacao is also a great source of antioxidants and has potent aphrodisiac properties, healthy minerals and mood-boosting compounds such as PEA, known as the ‘love chemical’. Make sure you get unrefined chocolate, though - commercial products are full of sugar, hydrogenated fats, milk, additives, agro-chemicals and solvents which cancel out the benefits.

The benefits of green tea have been widely reported. One study indicates that substances in green tea extract may actually promote weight loss. The catechin flavonoids in green tea may alter the body’s use of norepinephrine, a chemical transmitter in the nervous system, to increase the rate of calorie burning. Green tea also lowers cholesterol, reduces the risk of stroke, protects against cancer, prevents teeth cavities and has anti-inflammatory properties. And it even has a pleasant taste.

Another beneficial supplement which is becoming more and more well-known is omega-3 fish oil. These serve many different bodily processes - they’re especially good for the heart and the immune system, but also help with arthritis, skin conditions, pre-menstrual tension, mental function, improving memory and reducing depressive symptoms. It reduces insulin levels in the body - insulin promotes the use of fat for storage and reduces the use of fat for fuel, hence lower insulin levels mean greater conversion of fat for energy rather than storage.

Omega-3 is most abundant in oily fish like sardines, salmon and mackerel. Plant sources include flaxseeds (the richest plant source), walnuts, pumpkin seeds, green leafy vegetables, evening primrose oil, wheat germ and spirulina.

It’s possible to boost your immune system, lower your cholesterol, improve your energy and generally give your health a big help by eating the right foods. The body is usually in a state of homeostasis, meaning that your body automatically tries to keep its internal environment constant. Exercising more and cutting calories makes your body adjust, making changes to stop you losing critical body fat - push it too far and it goes into survival mode, grimly hanging on to all the calories it can. What you need to do is understand metabolism and coax your body to release stored fats.

There are two metabolic phases - anabolism and catabolism, which occur constantly and simultaneously. If you don’t eat enough or give your body the right nutrients it will go into a heightened state of catabolism, meaning you build less muscle - this is slow metabolism. To lose weight and improve your health you should aim for high metabolism - a greater degree of anabolism.

You may in fact need to eat more in order to lose weight - it’s not as simple as saying ‘just eat less’. Your body will hang on more tightly to calories if it doesn’t get enough nutrition. If you eat more calories more frequently you raise your metabolism. If you get your calorie intake right, you will see improvement and feel it too. This is where ‘negative calorie’ foods come in. Eating them makes the body exert more energy than contained in the foods themselves, so just eating them gives you a potential for net loss of calories.

Along with that omega-3 fish oil, these foods are all negative calorie foods:

Vegetables: Asparagus, fennel, gourd, aubergine, broccoli, leek, cabbage, lettuce, carrots, marrow, cauliflower, peppers, celery, chicory, radish, spinach, cress, tomato, cucumber, turnip

Fruit: Apricot, blackberry, mandarin orange, cantaloupe and honeydew melon and watermelon, clementines, peaches, plums, damsons, raspberries, grapefruit, rhubarb, guava, strawberry, lemon, tangerine.

So where do I go from here, well it’s easy, eat the right amount of calories you need for that day, exercise moderately daily and snack throughout the day on the negative foods that are listed above and your waist line will begin to change for the better.

Ginger for Upset Stomach

The common ginger root used in cooking has been found to
alleviate nausea, indigestion, and motion sickness.

For motion sickness ginger is more effective than the common
Dramamine, says the British medical journal Lancet.
Researchers recommend 1,500 mg. of ginger approximately 30
minutes before travel. An alternative is a 12 oz. glass of
ginger ale. Another study found that a 940 mg. dose of
ginger was effective if it was consumed 20 to 25 minutes
before travel.

Physicians in Europe found that 250 mg. of common ginger
stops the nausea and vomiting of mothers-to-be.

A study with 80 Danish naval cadets unaccustomed to sailing
heavy seas found that one gram of ginger reduced vomiting
and cold sweating. Fewer symptoms of nausea and vertigo
were also reported.

The magic ingredient is gingerol, the active ingredient in
ginger. It works with the gastrointestinal tract and does
not interact with the nervous system so it has no side
effects of toxicity.

A 1/2 teaspoon of ginger is as effective as Dramamine in
relieving motion sickness and is equal to 940 mg.

A ginger tea can be made by measuring one teaspoon of
powdered ginger in a cup of boiling water or fruit juice.

Another method of using ginger is to use essential oil of
ginger. Fill a bowl with boiling water, put in one drop of
ginger per pint of water used, cover your head and inhale
for 5 minutes with your eyes closed.

For morning sickness drink ginger ale or ginger tea, eat
ginger snaps or take 250 mg. of ginger four times daily.
Using 1/8 teaspoon of powdered ginger 4 times a day relieved
morning sickness in pregnant women.

During pregnancy, the total daily dose should not exceed one
gram daily. For others, the daily dose may approach two to
three grams if needed. For prevention of motion sickness,
begin taking three to four hours before the planned trip.

The active ingredient in ginger is gingerol, so when
purchasing a ginger extract, make sure it is standardized in
an 11:1 concentration. The recommended dose of the extract
is 1,000 mg.

While ginger is safe for most people, if there is a history
of heartburn or gallstones, a doctor should be consulted
before use.

How to Get Great Legs the Easy Way

Gorgeous legs are every woman’s dream. Unfortunately the legs are susceptible to a variety of pesky conditions that affect their beauty and health. Cellulite, varicose and spider veins, dry, flaky skin and of course flabby muscles can affect the legs’ appearance and your confidence.

So is there a solution to all these potentially devastating body image busters? Can you feel good about your legs and wear your skirt with pride? But of course.

The solution is really quite simple, yet sometimes so hard to achieve. And you know it just as well as I do. Proper, healthy diet and physical activity will give you great looking legs that you can feel good about. It will help you with the prevention of cellulite, varicose veins, spider veins and other ailments that negatively affect your legs’ beauty.

But you to hate exercise, you say. That’s ok, you don’t have to be a marathon runner or spend every day at the gym. You don’t even have to commit yourself to a specific exercise routine.

But what you have to do is commit to being physically active and have fun doing it, because if you don’t enjoy an activity, then you’re less likely to stick with it.

Think of things that you could have fun doing. Roller skating, skiing, biking, swimming, walking, jogging, playing tennis or just running around with your kids are all activities that not only can be fun, but also they are great for shaping and toning your leg muscles and weight control.

Once you decide which activities fit your life style, commit yourself to doing them at least three times a week for an hour at a time. Just remember to warm up and stretch before any activity and have fun!

What if you don’t have time to get out three times a week? There are other options. If you work full time, you probably drive to the office and park as close to the building as you can. Choose to park few blocks away and take a brisk walk instead. Not only that will work your legs, but also it will energize you in the morning, better that a cup of coffee.

What about elevators? Do you find yourself taking one every day? Then stop. Start taking the stairs at least once a day. It is better that a stair climber. Just take your time and do it at your own pace.

So as you see physical activity is easier than it seems. The most important thing though, is to commit yourself to it and have fun doing it.

While you’re getting physically fit don’t forget about a healthy diet. It is just as important as exercise in getting great legs. It can be sometimes challenging to choose the right foods, but again if you commit yourself to healthy eating, it will be easier to make the right choices.

So what are the right and wrong choices?

Forget about junk food! And when I say junk food, I mean anything that has no nutritional value, like chips, fries, candy, cookies and pop.
It’s just as easy to grab a delicious fruit that you can enjoy and don’t feel guilty afterwards.

Other food to avoid are:

  • fried and deep fried foods

  • sweets, sugar and artificial sweeteners
  • processed foods that contain large amounts of salt or preservatives
  • carbonated beverages
  • alcohol
  • salt and salty foods
  • foods that contain “bad fats” like trans fats and saturated fats

So is there anything you can eat? Don’t fret. There is plenty of healthy, nutritious foods for your enjoyment.

The most important ones are fruit and vegetables. They are packed with fiber, vitamins and minerals, they are low in calories and contain no fat. Dietary experts recommend consuming 5 servings of fruits or vegetables a day. Because fruit is naturally high in sugar, you should limit yourself to 2 servings of fruit, but have as many veggies as you want.

Other foods that are healthy and not consumed enough by the North American population are:

  • foods high in omega-3 fatty acids

  • fish and seafood
  • lean protein

And let’s not forget about water! Water flushes out excess sodium and toxins out of your body. It contains 0 calories and is an appetite suppressant. It hydrates our skin, improves muscle tone and helps with weight loss. It is recommended to drink 6-8 glasses of water per day.

So start today. Follow a healthy diet plan, along with a physically active lifestyle and you will be on your way to achieving great looking legs that you can be proud of.

For more information about diet, physical activity and other tips for achieving great looking legs, I recommend checking out http://www.get-great-legs.com

Gout Pain Relief With “Cherry Power” - How To Ease Pain By Eating Fruit

We can all learn something new every day! And good doctors are constantly alert to learning from all of their patients. It takes a lot to surprise me after twenty years in medicine but - I hold my hand up - this is a new one!

I had never heard of cherry juice or fresh cherries being used to treat gout or for gout pain relief until I heard it recently from a patient (who had been told it by his pharmacist, who had heard it from a relative etc etc). Anyway - a quick search for the “treatment of gout” on google turned up one (rather ancient -1950) research paper and a whole stream of anecdotal reports about the positive effect of cherries and their juice. It seems that consuming about half a pound of fresh cherrys a day or half a litre of fresh cherry juice can significantly lessen the pain and swelling of gout.

I’ve never had gout and I hope you haven’t either but I can tell you it’s one of the most painful conditions known in medicine.

Our blood contains a salt called uric acid. It’s there all the time in everyone but is normally fully dissolved in the way that sugar is fully disolved in a hot cup of tea. But … if the tea cools down … what happens to the sugar? It comes out of solution as little sharp edged crystals. Well, guess what - that’s exactly what happens in an attack of gout pain.

A change in the blood chemistry allows the uric acid to crystalise out of solution and form little jaggy crystals (like bits of broken glass) in the joints. For some reason the first joint of the big toe is the most commonly affected - and the pain when walking is horrific. Quite literally “like walking on broken glass” as many of my patients describe it.

Anyhow - back to those cherries.

My patient swore that taking the cherry juice had made a big impact on his gout pain and had provided rapid gout pain relief. You might want to try this yourself if you have gout or you might want to recommend it to a friend or relative.I’m not clear whether tinned cherries can have the same effect.

The most commonly quoted explanation of the effect is that cherries contain flavonoid compounds that may lower uric acid and reduce inflammation. As I described above, uric acid is the body salt that triggers gout attacks.

I have found nothing published to suggest that taking regular cherry juice lessens the risk of you having an attack in the first place but if you suffer from gout regularly it may be worth a try. Cherry juice, cherry pie, ice cream with cherry sauce? Mmmm - sounds good to me!

Don’t Give Up On Weight Loss

Many of you have given up on weight loss. I’ve been there and it feels like you are at wits end. You don’t know what to do. You’ve tried it all. Now you believe it’s impossible for them to lose weight.

I quit!

Take heart, it is not that bad. I’m happy to tell you that after decades of struggle I’ve taken and kept off 45 pounds. More importantly, my weight is stable, health superb and physical shape great.

I tell you this simply to illustrate the fact that you don’t have to give up on weight loss. YOU can lose weight with a little guidance and faith in yourself.

First of all, relax. There is no fast, quick way to weight loss. Realizing this means any small change will take effect over time. Time is on your side.

If we look at people who have been successful at weight loss and maintaining that loss, a couple of things are very apparent. These two factors are present in the lives of most of them:

1. They do some form of aerobic exercise 5 to 7 days per week. It’s as simple as talking a walk each evening. Do it minimally 5 times a week for 30 to 45 minutes at a time.

2. They have developed more healthy eating habits. Healthy eating habits are also very important. More fruit or vegetables instead of candy cake and pie on 5 days out out 7 make the difference.

I’ve had many clients tell me that their daily exercise puts them in a “healthy” frame of mind and helps them to make better food choices. Bottom line, when you are exercising consistently, youreating habits are better.

I firmly believe that a major factor in most peoples frustration with weight loss is that they haven’t been told the truth about exercise. You see, twenty minutes, three days per week isn’t going to cut it for weight loss. If you’re serious about weight loss, then you have to get serious about exercise.

I’ve seen this work for many people who had given up on weight loss. It worked for me. It can work for you.

The Truth About Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome that is composed of many different symptoms. The primary symptom is pain and tenderness in multiple areas of the body. This is often linked to fatigue, sleep disorders, digestive problems, and depression. Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are considered to be overlapping disorders which many consider to actually be the same illness.

Many people consider these conditions to be psychosomatic in origin because people suffering from these conditions can look healthy and normal from the outside, and yet complain of so many different symptoms. These symptoms can include mental symptoms such as brain fog, forgetfulness, spaciness, depression, moodswings, anger, and extremes in behavior. Unfortunately, as a result many people with this disease are viewed with skepticism by medical practitioners and lay people alike and are often branded as hypochondriacs.

Another view of CFS and fibromyalgia is that the conditions are auto-immune diseases which are triggered by an infection. Most doctors take the view that Epstein-Barr virus, which is the virus that causes mononucleosis, is the primary culprit. This is rather doubtful, in my opinion, since most of the population is exposed to this virus early on in life without this virus triggering any serious long-term complications.

Then there is a new theory emerging among doctors who have used long-term antibiotic therapy to treat these conditions that fibromyalgia and CFS are not simply auto-immune diseases that are triggered by infections, but that the symptoms are signs of a chronic ongoing infectious disease process in the body. These doctors claim to have had excellent results in the treatment of these syndromes using long-term antibiotics, often in very high dosages. They have also had very good results with treating other so called “auto-immune diseases” with long term antibiotic therapy. Often, patients suffering from fibromyalgia, CFS, and other diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis experience complete remissions after a long course of antibiotics.

The positive results that these patients are experiencing implies that many auto-immune diseases may actually be chronic undiagnosed bacterial infections. There are a number of pathogens that are not easily detected in the body through standard diagnostic procedures and that are not easily killed off through a short course of treatment. These pathogens may be involved in fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. There is a new theory that chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia may be related to chronic mycobacterial infections.

It is also possible that many of these people actually suffer from Lyme Disease which has never been diagnosed due to the lack of proper testing. Lyme Disease is the fastest growing infectious disease in this country next to AIDS. Cases have been found in all of the lower forty-eight states. Lyme Disease is cause by a spirochetal bacteria called borellia burgdorferi. Borellia burgdorferi is a very resilient and adaptable organism. Doctors with clinical experience in the treatment of this disease have noted that certain antibiotics work for certain forms that the bacteria can take, but not for others. The spirochete can take a cyst form where most antibiotics cannot reach it. It also hides in the joints of the body, in areas of poor circulation, and it may hide within the cells of the immune system.

The Center for Disease Control estimates that only one in ten Lyme Disease patients are ever properly diagnosed. The CDC also estimates that it takes an average of thirteen doctors and an average of two years for these people to be properly diagnosed. By the time the diagnosis is made, the disease can be quite entrenched in the body. There are also often many co-infections in Lyme Disease patients that may cause a host of other complications. Nevertheless, since the disease and its associated co-infections are caused by bacterial organisms, and these organisms can be killed, there is hope for recovery.

Lyme Disease can cause all of the many symptoms that people with fibromyalgia and CFS suffer from. It can cause achy muscles and joints, depression, fatigue, migraine headaches, tingling nerve sensations, insomnia, sleepiness, digestive problems, poor circulation, blurry vision, hearing irregularities, mental problems, weak limbs, pain in the rib cage, liver enzyme irregularities, hypothyroidism, an increased tendency for red blood cells to clump together, swollen lymph nodes, and much more. The irregularities in liver function may be responsible for the chemical sensitivities that many people with fibromyalgia and CFS experience. Because the organism that causes the disease is often not in the bloodstream, it is difficult to diagnose the disease through testing. Doctors who are familiar with the disease tend to base their diagnosis mainly on the clinical symptoms the patient presents and the risk factors that the patient has had exposure to, using testing as only a secondary measure for making a diagnosis.

According to the doctors who use it, long-term antibiotic therapy may help people who suffer from fibromyalgia, CFS, Lyme Disease, and many other “auto-immune diseases”. Nevertheless, there can be serious side effects from this type of therapy. Antibiotics used a long period of time can cause kidney and liver damage. They can cause gallbladder problems. Many people also cannot tolerate oral antibiotics well because of the strain on their digestive system.

There are many alternative health options that can complement treatment with antibiotics and which may reduce side effects, and there are many natural remedies that have antibiotic and immune-enhancing properties of their own, for those who prefer to take a purely natural route.

Acupuncture may help to improve blood circulation and oxygenation to various areas of the body, enhancing the immune system’s ability to fight off infections. The increase in oxygenation can also create an inhospitable situation for bacteria that prefer a low oxygen environment. It also can stimulate the body to release natural pain relieving opiates into the body. The improvement in blood circulation may also help to increase body temperature in hands and feet and other areas of the body that tend to get cold easily. These are often areas of the body where bacteria, such as borellia burgdorferi, which prefer a low body temperature, may tend to congregate. Acupuncture can be used in conjunction with antibiotic therapy. It may help to improve the efficacy of antibiotic therapy by improving circulation.

According to Chinese research, there are many Chinese herbs that have immune enhancing and antibacterial properties. There are also many Chinese herbs that can help the various symptomatic aspects of fibromyalgia and CFS. Some herbs such as astragalus and schizandra can improve the body’s ability to handle stress and can boost immunity. Other herbs such as coptis and scutellaria have anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The Chinese herb, pseudoginseng, or san qi, can help promote blood circulation and is an extremely helpful herb for people with these conditions. It also improves the penetration, absorption, and efficacy of other remedies that are used.

Zyzyphus seed may help with sleep problems and anxiety. Bupleurum root may help relieve the moodswings and emotional aspects of fibromyalgia. The various types of ginseng can help to improve one’s energy level. Pseudoginseng, frankincense, and myrrh can help stimulate blood circulation and may help with symptoms of muscle weakness and joint pain due to poor circulation. Walnuts, gingko biloba, frankincense, gotu kola, and fo-ti may all help with the brain fog and cognitive difficulties that many people with fibromyalgia and CFS experience. Codonopsis, atractylodes, mint, and citrus peel may all help with digestive problems. Chinese herbs are used together in herbal formulas that are individualized to address the pattern of disharmony that the person presents. They are generally not used separately on a symptom by symptom basis.

For Lyme Disease, a few different Chinese herbs stand out for their potential usefulness. Smilax (tu fu ling), coptis (huang lian), garlic (da suan), houttuynia (yu xing cao), and teasel root (xu duan) are all herbs that appear to help to treat Lyme disease in different ways. Some of them have antibacterial properties, some strengthen the body generally, and some improve circulation. Prunella vulgaris, scrophularia, and kelp can help to reduce the incidence of enlarged lymph nodes, cysts, and pseudo-tumors that are commonly found in people with Lyme. Chinese herbal formulas such as Huang Lian Jie Du Tang, Ge Xia Zhu Yu Tang, and Xiao Fu Zhu Yu Tang can be helpful. Formulas designed to clear heat, move qi and blood, tonify yang qi, and transform dampness can all be helpful for different patients depending on the pattern of disharmony they present. After a long period of illness or for patients with emaciation and insomnia it may be necessary to nourish yin as well. People with a babesial co-infection, an infection with symptoms similar to malaria, generally need heat to be cleared from the shaoyang channel and need nourishing of yin. Artemisia can be a useful herb for babesia. It has been shown to have anti-malarial properties in China and Vietnam. For people with Lyme Disease who have nerve problems, it may also be necessary to clear liver wind.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has been used to treat people with Lyme Disease. Many have experienced good results and there is ongoing scientific research at the moment concerning its efficacy. The bacteria that causes Lyme Disease prefers an oxygen deprived environment. Its presence in the body appears to increase coagulation of blood and decrease circulation. It may thereby create the oxygen deprived environment that it prefers. This is great for the bacteria but can be the source of much of the difficulty that a person with this disease experiences. Many of the symptoms that people with Lyme disease, CFS, or fibromyalgia complain of are similar to symptoms that people experience from altitude sickness, which is caused by oxygen deprivation at high altitudes. The fatigue, the mental difficulties, the sleepiness, the feeling of having a ton of bricks attached to one’s limbs are all similar to symptoms that people with altitude sickness experience. It makes sense to me that creating an oxygen-rich environment could potentially be very helpful. It is important for testing for co-infections before beginning this process, because there are other bacteria that could be present that prefer a high oxygen environment, complicating the picture. There are potential side effects as well such as nearsightedness.

Colloidal silver is supplement that may have broad-spectrum antibiotic properties. Its proponents claim that it can aid all sorts of conditions from asthma to rheumatoid arthritis. It did appear to help my fatigue quite a bit at the early stages of my Lyme disease. There is the possibility that excessive use can cause a condition called argyria, which is a permanent bluish discoloration of the skin, although many people have huge quantities of colloidal silver with no problems at all. It is also helpful to take an acidophilus supplement while using this supplement in order to replace the good bacteria in your intestines and prevent problems with candida. Large amounts may be required to have an impact on Lyme Disease. It is possible to buy a colloidal silver generator and make your own colloidal silver at home. This is much cheaper than buying it on a regular basis at the health food store, but care must be taken to make it properly.

Aromatherapy is one of the most promising holistic therapies for conditions such as fibromyalgia, CFS, and Lyme Disease, in my opinion. The essential oils are concentrated versions of the volatile components found in herbs. It can take many pounds of plant matter to make an ounce of essential oil. For the most precious oil, made from the Bulgarian rose, it can take a ton of rose petals to make a pound of oil. Most of the oils have antiseptic and antibacterial properties. Many of them stimulate the immune system and trigger increased production of white blood cells. The oils also improve oxygenation of the body’s tissues and promote detoxification. They may have a chelating effect, which means that they may assist in carrying toxins such as heavy metals out of the body. Some oils such as lavender can be sedative and aid with sleep and reduce anxiety. Oil of oregano, which is a popular supplement found in health food stores is essential oil of oregano diluted in vegetable oil. It is almost always necessary to dilute the oils before using them because they are so concentrated. Interestingly, many people with CFS, Lyme Disease, and fibromyalgia are likely to find that some of their symptoms worsen when inhaling the fragrance of the oils. This is often a detoxification reaction. People with Lyme Disease generally seem to derive greatest benefits from stronger dilutions of essential oil than most aromatherapists typically use. It is important to use care when the oils are utilized in this manner. One should reduce the amount used if there is nausea or discontinue use if there is any allergic reaction. People with these diseases may discover that much of their fatigue, muscle weakness, mental fogginess, and pain can be significantly reduced with regular application of the oils. The oils can be used diluted in vegetable oil for massage of affected areas of the body, and they can be used by the drop in one’s bath water. They can also be absorbed into the bloodstream via the lungs simply by inhaling their fragrance. The oils also penetrate the blood-brain barrier and may be helpful for neurological issues due to infections or other reasons. Oil of oregano taken internally as directed can also be helpful in the treatment of Lyme Disease.

Massage can improve oxygenation of body tissues and improve blood circulation as well as reduce pain. If a person has fibromyalgia or CFS due to an infectious disease process, or a person has Lyme Disease, massage should only be used in combination with a therapy that is antibacterial in nature. Otherwise, it is likely to stir up dormant bacteria and stir up symptoms instead of providing symptom relief. When massage is used in combination with a therapy that is antibiotic in nature, it may improve the efficacy of that therapy by bringing bacteria out of hiding in order to be killed. Deep tissue massage may improve the efficacy of treatment with antibiotics, with herbs, with aromatherapy, or with heat. Used on its own, though, it may stir up latent problems in people with these conditions.

Heat can be helpful for treating Lyme Disease because the bacteria appears to prefer a low body temperature and is vulnerable to high heat. There are many different sources of heat that can be used to treat this condition. Heat can also be helpful for people with fibromyalgia and CFS who may actually have undiagnosed cases of Lyme Disease. People usually feel a worsening of symptoms before they feel an improvement with the use of heat. My personal theory is that this is because the heat stirs up the bacteria before it kills it off or triggers the immune system to kill the bacteria off. This is speculative on my part. The use of saunas can be very useful. A far infrared heat lamp can be used on problem areas. Hot baths taken for forty minutes at 102-104 degrees Fahrenheit have been shown to enhance immune system response in people with infectious diseases and auto-immune disorders in a research study done at Bastyr University. A Chinese therapy called moxibustion can also be useful in warming problem areas. I do not recommend the use of cold packs or ice for pain in people with Lyme Disease, fibromyalgia, or CFS as these therapies reduce circulation to areas where circulation is likely to already be compromised. Also, the bacteria that causes Lyme Disease appears to prefer a cool environment, so cold therapy may cause real problems in people with this condition.

In spite of the fatigue that people with fibromyalgia, CFS, and Lyme Disease may feel, a certain amount of exercise can be very beneficial if they are up to the challenge. It is important not to overexert oneself, but a brisk walk or other exercise that gets one’s heart pumping can be helpful. Again, exercise can be helpful because it can improve circulation in the body, and improve oxygenation of the body’s tissues. Exercises such as stretching and yoga that help to improve flexibility and loosen muscles can also be helpful. Hot yoga, where yoga is done in a room where the heat is cranked up can be particularly helpful because it combines exercise with heat therapy. It is important not to push too hard when doing exercise. The point is to improve your health, and not to wipe yourself out more.

Magnesium appears to be a useful supplement for people with these conditions. Many people report an improvement in their muscle pain when taking a magnesium supplement on a regular basis. It is important to reduce intake of sugar, dairy products and bread while increasing intake of green vegetables. Spirulina can be a useful addition to your health regimen as it is both nourishing and detoxifying. It may also be helpful to reduce consumption of tomatoes as they seem to encourage acidity in the body. Flax seed oil has an anti-inflammatory effect that can be very helpful. Alpha-lipoic acid is a helpful anti-oxidant. It may help nerve function and improve liver function.

As you can see, fibromyalgia, CFS, and Lyme Disease are complex ailments, but there are many promising therapies that people with these conditions are likely to find helpful.

Weight Loss Diets - A Review Of 4 Popular Diets

There are a number of diets available, but here I review four
which are popular at the moment.

1000 calorie diet

Trying the 1000 calorie diet is only advisable for one week, due
to your body entering starvation mode and conserving fat.
Overdoing the 1000 calorie diet is counterproductive to your
body so try to stay on it for only 1 week. After 1 week you will
loose between 3-5 pounds. The 1000 calorie diet can be used as a
starter diet for a long term weight loss program. Try to aim for
2-3 pounds of weight loss and a good exercise program to begin
with. After 1 week on the 1000 calorie diet, try upping your
calorie intake or reverting back to a not so severe diet, this
will prevent your body’s metabolism from slowing down. Here is a
simple 1000 calorie daily menu.

Breakfast * Banana sandwich made with 2 slices of wholemeal
bread and a small banana. * Small glass of orange juice

Snack * 1 pot of low fat yoghurt (preferably fruit)

Lunch * 1 wholemeal roll filled with tuna and low fat mayonnaise
(use tin tuna in spring water) * Mixed lettuce salad, red or
yellow sweet peppers, spring onions

Snack * 1 bag of lower fat crisps

Dinner * Roast chicken breast (without skin) * Potatoes, mashed
with 30ml semi-skimmed milk * Broccoli (all vegetables steamed
or boiled) * Carrots * Gravy (made from granules)

Evening * 1 low calorie hot chocolate drink made with powder and
water

Drinks throughout the day * Diet coke, water, black coffee or
tea without sugar

The 1000 calorie diet can be used as a starter diet for a long
term weight loss program. Try to aim for 2-3 pounds of weight
loss and a good exercise program to begin with. Remember after 1
week on the 1000 calorie diet, try upping your calorie intake or
reverting back to a not so severe diet, this will prevent your
body’s metabolism from slowing down.

Are There Asthma Attack Home Remedies - Or Just Hot Air?

If you have asthma and you start looking for information on the Internet, you’ll soon find several websites offering “100% sure” asthma attack home remedies. And it is very probable that you’ll feel tempted to buy one of them. No one likes being forced to take corticosteroids on a daily basis and an alternative, sometimes any alternative is always welcome. If effective asthma attack home remedies were really available at your drug store, of course you would buy them.

Do you see a logical problem there? Home remedies are by definition not bought, so avoid buying “asthma attack home remedies”. If you’re going to take some pills, make sure that you really know what’s inside them.

But the fact that some people try to sell asthma attack home remedies doesn’t mean that there are no remedies beside advanced chemistry. There are some that can not only prevent, but also stop an asthma attack. Such home remedies can be easily used as a support for a standard treatment, especially in case of mild asthma, but they should never replace standard medications.

Below there are a few asthma and asthma attack home remedies. Some of them work wekk, some of them are just “supposed” to work, but fortunately all of them are completely safe. Generally, all of them are different methods of warming your airways. This often prevents or helps during an asthma attack.

Hot bathroom

During an asthma attack, some people run into their bathroom, close the door and try to create as much warm steam as possible. Alternatively, they have a very hot bath or try some similar home remedy. The increased air temperature eases the attack and makes breathing much easier, though if you don’t suffer from asthma, we might think just the opposite.

Of course if your asthma is severe, it is recommended to use your inhaler or nebulizer instead of any asthma attack home remedies.

Hot water or coffee

Another common acne home remedy is drinking hot coffee, tea or plain hot water. On their way down, these drinks warm the airways and can ease the attack. The mechanism of these asthma attack home remedies is similar to the hot bathroom ones, but they are much easier to apply. The only problem is that during an acute attack this might be not enough.

Yes, asthma attack home remedies may seem simple, but often they are very effective.
