Mobile Broadband Marches Ahead despite Recession

Ofcom’s annual Communications Market Report, which gives an insight into the £52 billion worth communications market of the UK, which includes broadband, TV, radio, mobile and telecom industries, was published today.

The outcome of the lengthy exercise taken up by Ofcom highlights the attitude of the consumers towards communications media across the UK. The report also reflects upon the revenue growth in the telecom industry as a whole, despite recession. It says that recent trends show that consumers would prefer cutting down their expenses on any other luxury instead of their mobile or broadband usage, which in turn has allowed the industry to remain stable even in these difficult time.

The report also suggests that mobile broadband has been seen as an additional service to fixed connections in almost 9% of the households in UK. This is calculated from the fact that by the end of March 2009 almost 12% of families had mobile broadband connection out of which about three fourths already had fixed connections. In addition, around a quarter million of fresh mobile broadband contracts were started in May alone this year, showing how rapidly the technology is growing in the UK.

In other words, despite the recession, people are ready to compromise on other things but not on mobile and broadband services.
