New Strategy to Improve Workplace Health and Safety

On Wednesday, the 3rd of June, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is going to formally float its new strategy ‘Be Part of the Solution’ as an effort to improve Britain’s health and safety standards. It is a consequence of three months of deliberation by the HSE towards prioritisation of health and safety issues at workplaces.

The strategy will emphasise on the need for a collective effort towards improving health and safety measures in this highly competitive environment. It will discourage businesses from taking cost-saving shortcuts during times of financial instability that may increase cases of occupational casualties and injuries to employees.

The keynote address will be delivered by the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Rt Hon James Purnell. Other speakers in the panel include Judith Hackitt CBE, Chair of HSE, and Brendan Barber, General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC). Questions will be invited for the panelists to make the session more interactive.

The official launch of the strategy will be preceded by the release of the findings of a study being conducted by the HSE, which primarily focuses on people’s attitudes towards risk and safety at the workplace. The study is expected to yield startling results.

In the first ever case under the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007, Cotswold Geotechnical Holdings will have to face charges of corporate negligence in court on 17 June. The organization is under the scanner for the death of one of its workers, and the judgment will provide guidelines for such cases in the future. The case makes the latest initiative form the HSE all the more relevant.
