I hit my teenage years in the early 80s about the same time VCRs and independent video rental shops came to every small town in America. This was before yogurt shops and tanning booths hit, and after most of the drive-ins and arcades had faded away, though my town had all five simultaneously.

During that time I got turned on to couple of happenstance rentals now both cult classics. One was Evil Dead and another was the original
Gone in 60 Seconds.

It seems cult classic films follow a similar path as collectables. It couldn’t have appeared to have any value at the time for it to have any value now. What is the return on a Franklin Mint collectable? Will Freddy vs. Jason ever be a classic? Probably not.

Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street are classics, no doubt, but they aren’t likely to ever reach cult status. The latter, if I recall correctly, was B movie flop in the theatre, hit the ever-growing network of video rental stores where it caught the attention of kids too young to otherwise have seen it, and then was re-released into the theatres as a hit.

Gone in 60 Seconds was a little known drive-in B movie from before my time that even the rental shops couldn’t bring back to life. And I suspect that the H.B. Halicki series of car chase classics have generated more revenue since the 2000 remake Gone in Sixty Seconds, than in the previous quarter century.

I have an affinity for guy movies that I now never find the time to watch with a wife and child. I’m talking about the kinds of movies you simply can’t watch in the presence of a female. Clint Eastwood the outlaw, the brawler, or the dirty cop. Anything with Charles Bronson. Al Pacino in the Godfather series, Serpico, Scarface, Carlito’s Way, or even Glengarry Glen Ross. Or Paul Newman in The Hustler, Hombre, Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, or the hilarious Slapshot.

Along the same line, I’ll take a good car chase movie any day. I like car chases like I like porn. Get right to the action. The better the car chase the less I care about the plot. Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry would have been a whole lot better without Peter Fonda’s bad acting. All I wanted to hear was the badass roar of the 440 Dodge Charger.

It is in that spirit that Car Chase Classics is born and what follows is a list of some of my
all time favorite car chase, car race, and cool car movies:

Gone in 60 Seconds
- Classic must see for the car chase enthusiast.

Deadline Auto Theft
- Follow on to Gone in 60 Seconds

Eat My Dust
- Ron Howard steals a Dodge Charger, king of muscle cars.

Return to Macon County
- Nick Nolte, Don Johnson and hot Chevy.

Bonnie and Clyde
- Lots of great classic cars in this film.

Jeepers Creepers
- The demon powered ‘41 Chevy COE couldn’t be any more ominous.

The Hitcher
- Great combination of semi and suspense.

Black Cadillac
- Cool old Cadillac Limousine doing the chasing.

Dazed and Confused
- Chock full of cool cars. Lots of tire spinning and chase with Chevy PU. This movie epitomizes my teen years.

Formatting Your Ezine and Email Messages with TextPad

One of the questions I am most often asked is how to format ezines. I always use TextPad for these, to format articles and a multitude of other email offerings. This software *fixes* hard line breaks so that everything comes out looking neat. It’s a tool I would be lost without.

(You can get a free download of the evaluation version here: http://www.textpad.com/ This is fully working.)

I found it a little confusing to configure at first and had to ask for instructions, so here they are for you in case you haven’t found the *secret* yet …

1. From the top menubar pick Configure, then Preferences

2. A box will have poped up. In there, choose Document Classes (Click the little + to the left of that category to expand it.)

3. Next click on the word “Text” within the list of choices in that section.

4. The right hand part of the box should now have changed. You should see a place at the bottom right there where it says “Word break at column number”

5. Click to put a tick in the box to the left of that statement.

6. Type 60, 65 or however many characters per line you wish in the little box to the right of the statement. 65 is probably “industry standard”. I like 60.

7. Click OK

You should now be set up correctly.

In use, there are a couple of other things you need to be aware of:

1. To make the formatting work in each individual document, you need to depress (to the IN position) the little button that is along the second to top row of the menubars. It looks like a “squiggle” or an S backwards.

If, for instance, you have pasted in some text that was previously formatted at more than your set number of characters, it will then instantly show up the “funny” breaks, which you can manually correct, or it will automatically format the new text you type.

2. Also, and this may seem obvious, but you MUST save the document in TextPad first to *fix* in the breaks, before you copy and paste the text to either your email program or your online message posting box for your ezine distribution.

Saving adds necessary, but invisible to you, code for the hard line breaks. If you do not save your work first, it will look right to you in TextPad, but will not be right when it is sent by email.

Happy Formatting!

Ezine Assistant is a program you can use as an alternative, if you really cant get along with TextPad. That also has facilities for setting the line breaks. You can grab a copy from: http://tucats.virtualave.net/eza2_0.exe

There is also an online formatting facility: FormatIt: http://www.jbmckee.com/formatit/index.html

For a great online tutorial on formatting, which also has screenshots on how to use TextPad:

Bingo is one of the most simple and general game of all times. Be it children’s party, classrooms, charity functions or a simple time pass, Bingo finds it place everywhere.

Bingo originated in Europe. The early games were played in Italy back in 1500s. later the French adopted the game and introduced the first bingo cards. Later the Germans used the game to tech children basic arithmetic and English. By 1800s the game had gripped entire Europe. The game was introduced in America in early 1900s. Owing to its thrilling nature, the game spread fast and was soon used not only in gatherings but also in fund raising events especially by the church. Even today the game is used in charity functions and in primary schools.

The pre requisites to play the game are Bingo cards and bingo cages, which contain the balls to be called out. A bingo cards consists of five rows and five columns. These twenty five spaces conventionally have numbers written on them. However, to add kicks to the came one may replace them with cars, traffic signals etc. daubers or chips are used to mark the numbers that are called in the game. Usually players prefer daubers to chips. The popularity of daubers has increased so much that daubers now come in various sizes, shapes and designs like Uncle Sam daubers, Elvis daubers etc. personalized daubers are also in vogue. A Bingo kit contains all the necessary requirements.

Like all other games, Bingo enjoys it own terminology. One needs to be aware of the Booklet, Blackout, Coverall, Face and numerous other terms to play the game easily.
Over the years various works on the game have found their way to the book stalls. There are books available for novices, for players willing to excel at the game, even for those who want to cheat in the game. Though the game is quite simple, serious players can devise certain strategies using these works. The books also help the players to diversify into various other games using bingo. Some directories exist that list the places where the game is played.

The exciting feature of Bingo is its luck factor. Everyone has a fair chance of winning. The luck factor brings with it superstition. Lucky charms and stones are common place in the game of bingo.

Bingo Cruises are organized at different times of the year for bingo fans. These cruises give the players a chance to play and holiday at the same time. the cruises can extend from one day to a span of a week. The prizes include gifts and money.

Websites, nowadays, also provide Bingo games online, which are easily accessible. These games are continuously played in gaming rooms and one can comfortable join in.
Bingo, though a recreational activity, is governed by the Bingo Act of 1996. the Act contains certain provisions like the tax terms, the prize money in a game, the regulation of Bingo organizations etc.
The widespread development of Bingo and its popularity has given rise to an entire line of merchandise dedicated solely to the game or its related areas. From the Bingo kit to good luck charms that shower luck on the player, everything can be bought from the markets.

Ray Charles 1963 Live in Brazil

Artist: Ray Charles
Title: O-Genio-Ray Charles 1963 Live in Brazil
Format: DVD
Genre: Soul- Jazz.-Pop- R & B-Blues
Label: Rhino Records-http://www.rhino.com
Website: http://www.raycharles.com
Media: http://www.rhino.com/video/RayCharles

You know what is nice about writing a review on Ray Charles? He was celebrated while he was here in the world of the living, not after his passing.

O-Genio-Ray Charles 1963 Live in Brazil is an early performance in black and white film of Ray and his incredible band performing live in Brazil in 1963. While the quality of the video is suspect at times, particularly on the second set, the performance by Charles and his orchestra is simple mesmersizing. To be honest I never delved into this man’s music as I did on this DVD. Much to my delight, I absolutely loved every minute of this.

Charles really was a musical genius. His ability to take ordinary standards like “You Are My Sunshine” and “My Bonnie” and turn them into soulful jazz workouts was a true wonder of musicianship and technical brilliance.

I can easily overlook the quality of the video for the historical importance and musical treasure that this performance captures. If you like the music of Ray Charles, or music in general for that matter, you will sincerely appreciate what this timeless DVD has to offer.

Beauty Shop

Beauty Shop tells the story of Gina (Queen Latifah) as she moves to Atlanta so her daughter can go to an exclusive music school. She finds a job as a stylist at a high end salon but after a confrontation with her boss leaves and opens her own beauty shop.

Beauty Shop doesn’t quite rise to the occasion as it repackages and regurgitates characters, themes and plots that we have seen before. It is one thing to tell a story that has previously been done yet bring something new to what may be an overdone but entertaining storyline and it is another to retell a story and not bring anything new to the table at all. Beauty Shop falls into the latter category and suffers greatly for it.

The main problem with Beauty Shop is that it is Barber Shop with women. From the plot twists to the characters inside the shop, it is the exact same movie as Barbershop except with Queen Latifah at the helm instead of Ice Cube. There is the funny, familial and penny pinching boss, Gina (Queen Latifah). There is the misguided, yet full of potential stylist in training, Darnelle (Keshia Knight-Pulliman). There’s the arrogant, know it all stylist who is a pain in everyone’s side, Chanel (Golden Brooks). There’s the novice stylist of a different race that can’t get any business, Lynn (Alicia Silverstone) and finally there’s the opposite sex stylist who is the only one of his kind in the salon, James (Bryce Wilson). Add to that the money problems, someone trying to take over the business and the possibility that the shop may have to close for good and you have the same movie, same story without any added flare. You even have the character that hawks their goods at the shop: in Barbershop it was a man selling bootleg CDs and DVDs and in Beauty Shop it is a woman selling catfish and monkey bread. The concept of being original must have never crossed the writer’s minds.

And once again I say, can we dispense with the gay stylists. That is a stereotype that can go to the stereotype graveyard never to be seen or heard of again…ever. Kevin Bacon, an actor I love does an absolutely horrible and I repeat horrible job playing Latifah’s gay and fascist boss. We can also dispense with “metrosexuals” the new overused and unfunny effeminate male stereotype that is going to appear in every movie where men are employed in what are typically considered to be women’s jobs. If so, I say please stop now before you make audiences suffer anymore then we already have at this new, unnecessary caricature. There was one of these characters in “Guess Who”, and one of Beauty Shop’s many subplots is trying to figure out if the only male stylist is gay, straight or a metrosexual which would be a cross between the two.

For positives, there were some laughs and the opportunity to see a shirtless Djimon Hounsou was almost worth my money, but overall Beauty Shop was unoriginal and a bore. Ultimately the question is — do you really want to spend your money on something you’ve already seen before. For me the answer is simple: No, I don’t.

Baccarat for beginners

Baccarat is an adorable game of cards on the land of Europe. The term Baccarat means zero in both Italian and French. The game like many others has its own history. While some believe that Baccarat is an Italian product, others hold France as its motherland. Initially the game was plated with a tarot card deck. It gradually became the favorite of the high-class French society people from where its slightly modified form got its name as ‘Chemin de Fer’. After this the game made its way to the land of England and from there to the American soil.
So basically there are four types of Baccarat played today-
Chemin de Fer
European Baccarat
American Baccarat - It is more or less a mixture of European Baccarat and Chemin de Fer form of it.
Baccarat Banque
The best part is that all the four forms of the game have single vocabulary and playing objectives.
There are two types of Baccarat tables- mini table and traditional Baccarat table. The two tables differ in size, the number of players that can play as well as the manner in which markings and labeling done on them.
Next comes the card values where only aces are counted as one, all tens and faces are worthless-of zero value. Suits are insignificant here. The value of cards is first added and then the first digit is removed or dropped. So a total of 12 will be counted as 2, leaving the digit 1. In the game of Baccarat, which is most often known as the game of chance, there are only three options to wager. These are- banker wins, player wins or a tie case. There are more than one card decks used for this game. This always keeps one in a quandary as to who will emerge as the lucky winner.
The best a player can do to win this game is to evaluate the number of odds. The odds break down is in the following way- Bank- 1.01% house edge, Player-1.29 % house edge, Tie-15.75% house edge. These figures are an outcome of the drawing rules that are made to produce these results. The number of decks used is also a considerable factor in winning the bet. For say if 6 decks are used then the chances of bank winning to the player are more.
In the widespread American Baccarat either 6 or 8 decks are used. It requires three dealers and the main dealer is called the ‘croupier’. The shuffling of cards is the onus of the house dealer while the placement of cards in the shoe and handling it to the first player is the task of the croupier. If a player is disinterested in dealing, he may pass on the shoe, which rotates counterclockwise to the direction of the table to another player. The betting is to be done before the dealing of each hand. After this the croupier deals four down faced cards. The one who has made the largest bet on the ‘player’ gets the first opportunity to see the player’s hand. If there is an eight or nine - a ‘natural’ on any of the two hands, that player wins, the round comes to an end. If both cards are the same, it’s a tie case and if both hands are naturals, 9 outweigh the 8.

So if you have spare money and time and you are also confident of your luck, try the game of Baccarat …who knows… it may bring a wonderful fortune!

Baby Shower Guide - 10 easy steps

1. Who will plan the Baby Shower

Baby showers can be hosted by anyone for the new "parents to be." It can be a
family member, a friend, or a co-worker. If it is a surprise shower, then the family can help out with the guest list and gift items.

2. Baby Shower Budget

To determine how much the shower will cost, you will need to know the number of guests, the location of the shower, the menu, what type of party favors, and how many game prizes you will need.

3. Guest list

Organize your guest list by asking the parents-to-be who they would like to have at the shower. Usually this includes friends and family, but a few close co-workers may also be invited. Get address, phone numbers, and email addresses. Decide if it will be a "girl’s only" shower or "couples".

4. Baby Shower Theme

Baby showers are fun when having baby shower games! Be a kid again with teddy bears and stuffed animals for decorations. Or, invite couples and do a buffet or outdoor party. Whatever theme you choose, remember this will be the baby’s first party. Baby shower party favors are fun to hand out at the end of the party. Have fun!

5. Selecting the menu

Although your menu should reflect your theme, the time of day is as
important - as well as the number of guests. Make this a day of celebration for the Mother-to-be or parents-to-be, her guests, and yourself. Consider the amount of time and room available for the shower, as well as any special dietary needs of the Mother-to-be and her guests.

6. Location of the Baby Shower

Choose a location that is easy to get to and will accommodate the needs of the party. Generally, baby showers are held at the home of the host. Have an idea of how many people you expect before arranging any final details.

7. Select the Baby Shower date

The baby shower is normally around six weeks before the due date of the
baby’s birth. However, some mothers are electing to have the party after the baby is born. Showers are held on weekends and during the week. Try to make the time and day convenient for everyone including any out-of-town guests.

8. Selecting the time

If most of the guests attending the shower work, then an evening or weekend shower will work best. Consider a weeknight for a change of pace if everyone lives near each other. If you choose a weekend date, plan your shower early enough in the day for all who must travel to attend. Be sure to keep in mind the Mother’s schedule (naps, doctors appointments, etc.).

9. Baby Shower Invitations

Baby Shower Invitations can range from the casual (a phone call) to the most formal (printed invitations). You decide what will work for your shower. Be sure to include all necessary contact information. Consider also including your email if you check it every day.

10. Entertainment

As guests arrive, introduce them to one another. As a unique conversational item, ask your guests to wear a small photo of their child on their shirt. Who doesn’t love to brag about their child?!? Another way to break the ice is to provide name tags with a small note, such as, "I attended grammar school with Susie." This is a sure way to start conversations. Make sure to offer your guests liquid refreshments and whatever else you have provided. Printable baby shower games are a blast! Set the mood with lighted candles, flowers, and baby shower decorations. You want your guests to enjoy the day (or evening) as much as the guest of honor.
