5 great Poker tips

1. Enjoy your self

"Poker is a game to be enjoyed, no matter what level you play at. Bad Beats
are, in truth, part of the game, but remember, we all inflict them as well,
in equal number over a period of time, so don’t let a bad night at the table
spoil your fun. The chances are, tomorrow will go the other way."

2. Keep a score

"Did you make a profit playing poker this week? Well, few of us admit to
making a loss, but even the world’s best players have bad runs. So keep a
log of what you win and lose each day, or week. And be honest with yourself.
It does not matter what you tell your friends, but you MUST keep an accurate
running total of your poker profit and loss account. You’d be surprised just
how much a losing week focuses your mind!"

3. Play a natural game

"Do you restrict your play to a level you can afford? No? Well you ought to!
If you play at levels beyond your pocket, fear is behind every decision you
make at the table. Fear is the players biggest enemy, because it inhibits
you from playing your natural game. So if it hurts your pocket too much,
step down a level for a few weeks, and rebuild your bankroll. It’s
surprising how much better you will play after a confidence boosting week at
lower levels. You know it makes sense!"

4. Play in tournaments

"Most of us want the chance to play in the really big tournies, or appear on
one of those televised comps. Well YOU can play these. Sporting Odds.com runs
poker tournament satellites every day, and someone has to win them. It could be, as the
saying goes, YOU - but only if you enter them. You can’t win one if you
don’t enter for them, so why not give one a whirl today? Come on, let’s play
poker!…"

5. Cool is cool

"Hands up if you have ever "tlted up" after a bad outdraw, or lost your rag
after some muppet has made a bad play against you and got lucky. Yup, I
thought so - most of us have lost our cool at the table now and then. But we
make BAD decisions when we are disturbed or upset by a setback. So if you
think you are likely to tilt up, sit out for a while, until you have calmed
down, you know it makes sense. Cool is cool!"

3 Secrets To Understanding What Music Is Made Of

It’s no secret that virtually everyone loves music in some form or other. After all, it is the universal language, and we all participate in it to some degree from the cradle to the grave. It starts with our Mothers’ lullaby, ends with our funeral song, with a zillion other stops along the way.

But what is music, anyway? What makes it tick? We all love some form of it and dislike other forms of it.

The country-western fan may not like jazz, but he or she sure loves the sound of pickin’ & grinnin’. And the jazz fan feels just the opposite.

And that’s as it should be. If we all liked the same kind of music, there just wouldn’t be the variety that is available to us now. We can choose from musical styles ranging from heavy classical and opera to rock to children’s songs to Broadway musicals to gospel music to the blues.

Each has its place, and each seems on the surface to be drastically different than another form of music. The key word is “on the surface.” But beneath the surface of all music is a commonality that is organic to all forms and styles of music.

So what does all music have in common?

At least 3 things - sometimes more, but never less:

1.Melody
2.Rhythm
3.Harmony

The melody is the part of a song or composition that you whistle or hum - in other words, the tune of the song. In one sense, it is the most visible of the 3 elements, because melody is what identifies a song. Without melody, it would be difficult to even conceive of a song or piece.

In musical notation, the melody is almost always written in the treble clef - also known as the treble staff. It consists of a horizontal line of notes that move up and down on the clef as the tune moves higher or lower.

Rhythm is the beat - the swing - the throb of the music. It happens in repeating patterns, depending upon the type of music. It is like a horizontal line of beats which occur at regular or semi-regular intervals. A waltz, for example, basically consists of a heavy beat followed by two lighter beats. So we say that a waltz is in triple meter - one strong beat followed by two weak beats, then repeated.

A march, on the other hand, generally consists of a heavy beat followed by a light beat, then another heavy beat followed by another light beat. (I’m simplifying, of course - there are many varieties…) So a march is in duple meter - as you might expect since we have two feet and we march in left-right-left-right patterns.

All rhythms are some combination of triple meter and/or duple meter, and the possibilities are endless - from boogie to R&B to mambos and sambas and bossa novas and….on and on.

Harmony, the 3rd aspect of music, is the musical background of a song - the chords, or intervals “behind” the melody. Without harmony, a song sounds empty - like a vocalist singing without an accompanist - or accapella. Music doesn’t HAVE to have harmony to function, but in actual practice it almost always does, even if it is just the interplay of two melodies, as in counterpoint.

You could spend a lifetime learning all the nuances of music, but it its most basic form, it is these 3 elements combined together; melody, rhythm, and harmony.

How to tell if someone reads your HTML newsletter or ezine

Title: How to tell if someone opens your HTML newsletter: The ants come marching 1×1 - Hurrah! Copyright Eric Koshinsky, 2003

There is no real way to know exactly how many times your newsletters are read. There is a neat little ‘trick’ you can use with HTML based newsletters and email so that you can know at least how many times it has been viewed. Compare the number of views the number of copies sent out and you will have a reasonably good idea of how well read your newsletter is. With HTML newsletters and email messages it is possible to tell if the message has been opened.

It all sounds reasonably simple, and actually it really is quite easy. All you need to do is: 1) create a simple 1×1 clear .gif image. 2) Upload the image to your webserver so it is on the internet. 3) Insert the image at the head of your newsletter/email. 4) Mail out your newsletter/email to your mailing list.

Now, when a reader opens your newsletter, the invisible image is loaded, your server’s webstats record the hit, and presto, you know how many times your newsletter has been opened.

In a bit more detail.

Create the 1×1.gif file. To do this, any basic image editor will do. Simply create a new .gif image that is 1 pixel X 1 pixel with a transparent background. Jasc software’s Paintshop pro is a great and cheap image editor for PC’s, and graphicConverter is a great one for Mac. Don’t worry, if this seems to be too much of a bother, you can you can simply download the image at the newbie-guides.com download directory. Simply search for ‘clear-image’. Save it in a place that is easy to remember. The 1×1 image is invisible when opened!

Upload the image to your webserver

Use whatever ftp (file transfer protocol) software you like and simply upload the file to your images directory. I normally make a special directory only for these images. This way my counter images are in a folder /images/counters/ to keep them seperate from the other images - it just helps keep things more managable.

Insert the image into your newsletter.

Please note that because many article publication newsletters do not allow HTML in the article text, I have placed the different elements on seperate lines. Simply make each HTML statement into a single line should you wish to use it.

This is quite straight forward. Just insert the HTML statement:

at the start of your newsletter, just after the tag.

Of course, if you are using some wysiwyg editor like FrontPage, be sure to insert the image from your webserver, and NOT from your local hard drive!!

Mail out your newsletter as usual.

It is important to keep in mind that you will need to give the my-1×1.gif file a different name every time you send out your newsletter. This way your webstats will track each newsletter seperately. For example if you send out your newsletter twice a month, you might name the counter images: JAN-counter-A.gif and JAN-counter-B.gif for each of the mailings. NOTE: Don’t delete the first one, simply copy it and give it a new name for the next mailing. That way the original image will keep recording hits for you!

So, simply duplicate the file, and then rename the file on your server as well as the HTML code in your newsletter. This means you will end up with something like this (inside the ‘images/counters’ directory on your webserver): JAN-counter-A.gif
JAN-counter-B.gif
FEB-counter-A.gif
FEB-counter-B.gif

In your newsletter the HTML code would be something like:

in your first January mailing and…

in your second January mailing..

If you are worried that all these images will consume all your webspace - DON’T. A typical 1×1.gif uses about 1k of diskspace. Not really something to be overly concerned about!!

Now what you will need to do is check your web server stats to see how many times your image has been ‘hit’. Every time an image is loaded through your webserver, it is recorded as a hit. Look to see how many times it has been ‘hit’ and you know how many times your newsletter has been read!

Just how do you check your webstats? Well I’ve written another article that explains webstats in more detail, but basically, your webhost package will provide you with all that stats, and a program that will analyze them for you. Two of the most common stat’s packages are awstats, and webalyzer. Any reputable webhost will have one (or both) of these installed as part of your hosting package. Simply log into your hosting administration account (which is also where you create email accounts etc.) and use the stat’s package they have installed.

You will be looking to find your 1×1.gif (whatever you named it). Every stats package displays information a little differently, so you will have to look a little to find your information. Most commonly you will look for something like:

-Top URL,
-Most Requested Files,
-File hits

Once you find the information, you can check it against your mail out numbers and have a much better idea of how well you are reaching your subscribers and clients.

If you are an astute reader, and I’m sure you are, you’ll already know that there are some problems with this technique. As with most things in life, it isn’t perfect. The chief problem is one that simply can’t be solved, by any technique! That problem is simply that just because your newsletter/email is opened doesn’t mean that the reader actually reads your newsletter very carefully - or at all! But then again, there is NO WAY to ensure that someone reads your newsletter - although having a totally skookum newsletter that people want to read certainly helps!

A second problem is that some people, very foolishly, have their email program’s ‘auto-preview’ window pane open all the time. This means that as soon as they click on a message (even if only to delete it), it is displayed at the bottom of their screen. This still records a ‘hit’ in your webstats, but may not have any real meaning. A ‘false-positive’ as they say.

The final dilemma is that this won’t work with text only email messages and newsletters. The whole concept depends on the image being ‘pulled’ from your webserver when someone opens the newsletter. This simply doesn’t happen with plain text newsletters. Sorry ’bout that!

There is no truly perfect way to know how many people are reading your newsletter as it is sent out. But using this very simple technique you can have a much better idea of how many are being at least opened (and hopefully read) as opposed to simply being deleted or filtered out as spam.

Chicken Korma

(NC)The Royal chefs of the great Moghul Emperors made an enormous contribution to the richness of the celebrated Northern Indian cuisine, using cooking techniques which were mainly similar to those of the western world but raising them to new heights with their exquisite blends of spices and herbs.

Kormas were created for festive occasions and are considered by many experts top be the greatest expression of the master chef’s skills. A korma is mildly spiced and enriched by cream and ground almonds.

The korma technique can be applied to meats or to vegetables and calls for a thicker braising sauce than that normally used in western cooking. The use of butter and cream in the preparation results in a thick, savoury sauce that clings generously to meats and vegetables.

Chicken Korma, reduced to simple terms, is nothing more than braised chicken but the judicious blending of spices that are used to create the braising sauce makes it one of India’s most popular dishes. There are many great and complicated recipes but this one is simple, quick to prepare and will have your tastebuds dancing:

1 tbsp vegetable oil

1 lb boneless chicken thighs, cubed

1/3 jar of Sharwood’s Curry Stir Fry Sauce

1/2 cup chicken stock

2 tbsp ground almonds

3 tbsp light cream

1 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro for garnish

Heat the oil in a wok or deep-sided frying pan, add the chicken and stir for 5 minutes until almost cooked. Add the curry sauce, chicken stock, ground almonds and cream. Simmer for 5 minutes or until the sauce has thickened. Serve immediately with plain boiled Basmati rice, garnished with the cilantro. Delicious with spoonfuls of Sharwood’s Major Gray Chutney. Preparation time: 5 minutes; cooking time: 10 minutes. Serves 3-4.

10 Important, Easy Dating Rules for Your Success

1) Leave the mobile phone off! Do not answer it if it is on Silent either. You should only do this if you are expecting an emergency and I mean an emergency. You only look like a deadhead, self-centred fool answering a phone at a meeting that is important and that goes for all meetings. It’s inconsiderate and breeds contempt from the other party even if they agree to you answering it. They’re only being polite which you’re not, if you do have a ringing phone and answer it. This does not mean leave it at home - you may need it later.

2) Don’t smoke anything in the presence of others unless they also smoke and for goodness sake make sure that no one near you is eating. Never smoke in an area where people are eating even if they smoke. You would be a fool to smoke in the presence of your date when they didn’t smoke. If you’re keen, it may be time to think about not smoking in their presence again.

3) A good rule is not to talk about your achievements unless you are asked. Bragging is more often frowned upon and puts people off early. Show some interest in your date and their hobbies achievements and interests. If you do this regularly enough, it will become a habit and your good social skills will become very obvious to others including your date.

4) Find some way to compliment them. This is good practise even if you don’t think this person is right for you. What goes around comes around! This is also a great building block for social skills improvement.

5) Smart casual attire is always good for the first date. Girls - don’t go over the top with jewellery. It looks crass and sometimes cheap! Subtlety is the name of the game here. Boys - don’t swear or cuss. It only indicates ignorance and sometimes stupidity. It does not make you look tough. Your actions and the way you deal with life will show how tough you are quickly enough. Most people can find an adjective somewhere in their vocabulary to describe things. You’ll find that you can too!

6) Most girls like to be respected and despite their eye lashes fluttering away in some scenarios, they are generally quite bright and one step ahead of you. The more you treat them like your equal in conversation, the more quickly you will identify a good match for you or not.

7) Most boys like to have interest shown in their achievements or interests. In fact, you could just focus on this for the whole date and be safe if you wanted to.

8) Eat like a human being - don’t quaff down the food like it’s your last meal. Don’t fill up. This will ensure that you can feel good about doing something after you’ve dined i.e. dancing, a walk evn consider about going to a differnt venue for coffee, dessert, dancing or a drink perhaps. Mixing you’re venues often displays varying behaviour. If your date begins to swing from a chandelier after one drink you may want to consider the future carefully.

9) Boys - if you enjoyed your date, say so at the end of the evening. Follow up with a thoughtful gift such as flowers to her place of work or her doorstep. It does NOT have to be expensive. The surprise is what counts here along with the fact that you have obviously thought about her since the date. Hand write the card and leave a phone number she can catch you on.

10) Girls - try not to make yourself too available at the end of your first date. But make your feelings clear with an element of subtlety. Whatever you do not ask him if he will call again. Your mind set must be one of value and that if doesn’t call then there will be another who will.

One more thing - on your first few dates never and I mean never get in a discussion of old boy friends or girlfriends, ex wives or husbands, nor anything to do with these issues - Never!
