Christmas Ornaments - A Fascinating History!

Christmas ornaments may have had humble beginnings however this much loved and popular tradition of hanging Christmas ornaments has made people into multi millionairs today!

In the early 1800’s fruit (particularly apples) and nuts were the first Christmas ornaments used to decorate Christmas trees. Soon to follow Christmas ornaments of foil and paper streamers cut and made from the hands of family and friends were added. Among German families (who popularized the Christmas tree) they made Christmas ornaments out of gingerbread and other hard home-made cookies baked in the shape of fruit, stars, bells, angels and hearts. In other countries such as America, their first lot of Christmas ornament additions were long strands of cranberries or popcorn to circle their trees! They also added small intricately woven baskets that they nestled in the crooks of boughs. In the UK people started to show off their talents making creative Christmas ornaments from lace, paper and other materials. With all the Christmas ornaments displayed it was often noted that the Christmas trees themselves could be hardly seen!

It was not until the latter part of the 19th century that we saw mass produced Christmas ornaments being developed and sold which started in Germany. Particularly in Lauscha, Germany known for its glass making, they started by replicating fruit, nuts and other food items followed later by the manufacture of hearts, stars and popular shapes that came from the traditional cookie baked ornaments. Much later the glass blowers created moulds of saints, famous people and animals. The beautiful colored glass ornaments were adopted quickly and became a popular favorite for the Christmas tree. They became so popular that nearly everyone in the town was in some way involved in the creation of Christmas ornaments. All the ornaments were handmade by people who followed in the glassmaking traditions of generations of their families before them. Each ornament had a touch of individual craftsmanship and became unique and highly prized.

By the late 1800’s they were exported around the world. The famous Mr Woolworth is credited with part of his fortune being made from the importation and sales of German glass Christmas ornaments around the 1880’s to 1890’s when he sold more than $25 million worth of ornaments in his Five and Dime Stores.

The Famous Pickle Ornament!

There is a folk story that says for generations people were hiding a glass ornament (most likely from Lauscha) in the shape of a green pickle. The legend says that German parents started this tradition. The first one to spot the pickle ornament hidden in the Christmas tree got an extra present from St Nicholas at Christmas and were blessed with good luck!

Not far from the famous Christmas ornament glass blowers in Lauscha were the artisans in Dresden who introduced pressed and embossed paper ornaments featuring bright colors. They introduced new Christmas ornament shapes including birds and fish.

From the late 19th century the appearance of pressed tin with brightly colored lithographic surfaces appeared as ornaments. Thin foil strips were soon introduced (tinsel) and the German creators called it “angels’ hair”. Then came an abundance of varying materials including lace, wire and bead work which was often all used together to make one ornament.

After the war when American’s were coming out of the great depression the German ornament trade feared hostilities and so searched for a manufacturer who could make the ornaments in America itself. They got together with the Corning Company in New York who were then manufactures of light bulbs. By 1940 this company was making 300,000 ornaments a day compared to 600 for a skilled German glass blower. These ornaments were lacquered by machine and hand decorated.

Wonderful childhood memories of Christmas often revolve not only around presents but around the Christmas tree and its ornaments and other decorations. It was often a great event to dress in your best clothes and take the family to the big department stores to see the “Big Tree” with hundreds of fascinating ornaments on display. Highly reflective materials were most popular for ornaments and complexity and variety of ornaments were the driving factors for ornament sales. A popular legend said if you placed a reflective ornament on your tree it would repel an evil spirit trying to enter your home - they would see their reflection, then terrified they would withdraw! Later on electric trains and small villages were placed under the tree and miniature churches, stores and homes were the new ornaments placed on trees.

With the introduction of aluminum trees manufactures made special ornaments they assured us were fire proof and just as safe as the newly produced trees themselves. By the 1970’s there was the occasional popular culture figure, radio serial star or comic book hero, or even an occasional product ornament such as a Swift’s Premium Ham ornament. Then came the personalized ornament which became popular in modern times. Blue Lobsters Are Real!

Lobsters are supposed to be red right? … Well, yes and no.

Most live american lobsters are naturally colored an olive green or mottled dark greenish brown. In rare cases, lobsters come in shades of bright blue, white (albino), yellow, black, and red have been reported from time to time. Perhaps the most unusual colors are the “half-and-half” lobsters with a line straight down their backs where the two colors meet.

The major pigment in a lobster’s shell, astaxanthin, is actually bright red in its free state; but in the lobster’s shell astaxanthin is chemically bound to proteins that change it to a greenish color. When lobsters are cooked, heat breaks down these bonds, freeing the astaxanthin so that it reverts to its normal red color.

So how does a lobster turn bright blue?
A genetic defect has been found that causes a blue lobster to produce an excessive amount of protein. The protein wraps around a small, red carotenoid molecule known as as astaxanthin. The two push together, forming a blue complex known as crustacyanin which often gives the lobster shell a bright blue color. About one in a million lobsters are blue, but when cooked, it turns red like the other lobsters.

It has been suggested that more than ‘one in a million’ lobsters born are blue, but many do not survive because their bright blue shell brings too much attention to themselves, making them a prime target for predators. Scientists also believe that blue lobsters tend to be more aggressive than their normal colored counterparts. Since they don’t easily blend in, they have adapted and changed to be more aggressive to protect themselves.

The blue lobster is truly another gift from Mother Nature that most people never see. Many professional lobstermen go through their whole lobstering career without catching or even seeing a blue lobster. Those that do have the privilege of catching one, are amazed and excited as it is seen as a once-in-a-lifetime event and feel a sense of awe when they experience seeing the strikingly beautiful blue lobster for the first time. Those that are caught are not normally eaten, but rather given to aquariums and educational institutions and kept on display in tanks for others to admire.

Taxonomy of Homarus americanus:

Change Your Mind About An eBay Bid?

We have all made choices in life that two seconds later we know we should take back. Especially when there is money involved this can become a problem. In the age before computers it was very simple to change your mind about something you purchased. However, since computers have come into the picture changing your mind has become a lot more complicated process.

In terms of eBay there are a few rules that apply when a bidder decides to change his or her mind after winning the bid on an item. This can be both challenging for the person bidder and the seller, but remember no matter what your circumstance you do have the right to retract your bid on an item after you won, if you choose to do so.

The problem is mainly about credibility. While there are many legitimate reasons to retract a bid on eBay, such as accidentally entering an incorrect amount for your bid, we must also keep in mind that eBay will allow you to retract your bid for almost any reason. This means that a compulsive customer could decide to retract a bid for illegitimate reasons more than a number of times. This not only is a breach of the contract mentioned in the buyer’s guide, but also it wastes the seller’s time and resources. This can also damage the buyer’s reputation and possibly disqualify him or her from future bids. For these reasons I would not recommend bidding on an item unless you are completely confident that you want it.

Though retracting is never a healthy idea for your reputation, more than likely at one point you will need to use this option. Your first move should be to notify the seller immediately about the reason you are retracting. Next, click on the “Services” link that is located at the top of the navigation bar. From there find and click on the “Retract Your Bid” link which is located under “Bidding and Buying Services.” Then, put the item number in the form located on the Bid Retractions page. Last, you can select an automated explanation, click on the “Retract Bid” button and rest easy that your bid has been removed from the auction.
The eBay management, in reality, is reasonable on things like these. In fact, eBay may accept whatever reasons buyers have whenever they want to pull back a certain bid. But then, it may pose harm on the bidder’s reputation in the future.

Retracting can sometimes be a necessary life saver. But remember, while eBay will accept many different reasons for retracting bids, just as a final warning, it can and will hurt your reputation if you abuse this feature.

What Is Fishing Bait?

There is such an assortment of bait that it is difficult to recommend any particular color, size, or type as the best. There are more than a thousand good baits on the market. All will catch fish at some time or another.

Fishing baits usually weigh from to an ounce to three ounces. The most popular weight preferred by the majority of bait casters is the 5/8-ounce bait, while the average is between and 3 quarters of an ounce. Baits can either be used as a whole or cut into chunks. Anglers can also use dead or live baits.

The Different Types of Bait

There is a wide array of organisms being used as fishing baits. Among the different types used in fishing, the commonly used are the small fishes. These consist of widely used fishing baits such as herring, anchovies, menhaden, and some others that are inborn to certain local waters. Larger fishes are usually used as chunk baits.

Fishing baits can be used whole, chunk, and strips, based on the activities of the type of fishes being chased. The size of the fishing bait is usually well matched with the size of the fish being hunted. Other common organisms used for bait fishing are crabs, worms, shrimps, crabs, clams, sand fleas, eels, and squid. Among all of the organisms mentioned, the crabs and the shrimps are the well-liked organisms to be used as fishing baits.

Shrimp are favorably used as fishing bait and are considered to be very valuable bait for a huge number of saltwater fish, especially those that are considered “inshore fish” like redfish, speckled trout, shook, and a lot more.

Whereas, various crab species, especially the fiddler crab, sand flea, and the blue crab, are perfect fishing baits for many varieties of “inshore fishes” and “bottom fish.” These crabs are usually clasped through their shell, usually on either the right or left of the head.

How to Acquire Fishing Bait?

Fishermen can acquire fishing bait either buying them in bait shops or simply by capturing it themselves.

The advantage of buying fishing bait is convenience, while catching live fishing bait is less expensive and can be more effective in luring fish. Digging for earthworms is another activity. Earthworms make an excellent bait.

Indeed, when it comes to bait fishing, using the proper fishing bait are important and imperative to the success of fishing. Hence, anglers should know the basics of choosing fishing baits in order to save time and money.

Acquiring Potential Customer Information - Four Ways to Increase the Lifetime Value of Your Customer

Having knowledge about your customer base has myriad benefits but, hands down, the most important benefit of obtaining this critical information is using it to establish a strong enough relationship with them to encourage repeat sales and boost their “lifetime value.” Lifetime value is a term for how much a loyal customer is worth - how much they’ll spend - over the course of their relationship with your business. Hopefully, that relationship lasts their entire lifetime, literally.

That said, here are four ways to increase the lifetime value of your customers.

Add a Member’s-Only Section to Your Site

Encourage more customer interaction by adding a special member’s-only section to your website. This section should be a special area for existing customers and anyone else, for that matter - after they register (and give you their information in the process).

When your customers enter the members-only section, they should have access to member-only specials or discounts, as well as specialized information that’s exclusive to members. An example would be a nutrition company offering the latest insights about health and nutrition.

If you provide enough value for your members, you can start to ask them to participate in activities that will give you more insight into their lifestyles - like quick surveys about their habits and what products or services they value the most. You can then gather that information and post it in your members-only section to provide compelling reasons for members to visit frequently.

Let the members know you appreciate their thoughts and value their opinions. The “member’s-only” title makes the area appear special - and it is - but don’t limit access to the section; everyone who registers should be allowed to login and access the information. Remember, your goal is to collect information from as many existing and potential customers as possible.

Since you’ll be implementing a section to your site that has restricted access, you’ll need to integrate some sort of login function. A good IT staffer should be able to handle this no problem, but if you’re a super-small operation and don’t have that kind of resource, you can use a web-development tool like the one found at http://www.tools4webmasters.com/t4wsentry.htm. Yes, it costs money, but only about as much as it would to pay an IT professional to do the same thing, and sometimes taking the DIY approach can be more beneficial than you think - knowing how to manage the back end of your site can certainly come in handy.

Take Advantage of Message Boards

Taking advantage of online message boards is a great way to learn about your customers. Message boards are simply forums where people interested in the same topics can go to post their ideas and thoughts on subjects of their choice, get advice from experts, and socialize.

Like with the members-only section, you’ll want to include a registration section so visitors can join the board, and you can collect their information in the process. You don’t have to require registration, but make sure it’s available. There are all sorts of great resources for this. My personal favorite is Invision’s Power Board (http://www.invisionboard.com/ip.dynamic/products/index.html). It’s easy to install and manage, and it has all the built-in tools you’ll ever need.

Once you’ve got some visitors to your message board, you can let them suggest topics that they want to discuss and you can be the moderator. This gives you a chance to learn what subjects concern them so you can provide targeted information for their needs. You can also post discussion topics of your own to see how people respond to them.

Visit your message boards frequently to find out what your customers are talking about - what’s on their minds. These messages can provide invaluable insights into what your customers think and what they want. Not only are message boards a great tool for you to learn more about your customers, but they also create a sense of community that, if popular, will increase your site traffic dramatically. Really, they’re a must-have for your online presence.

Besides having a message board on your site, you can also visit other public message boards and even set up your own remote boards that are hosted on another site. The advantage to using these is that they’re hosted by sites that already get a lot of traffic, so you can really build up a user base even if your website doesn’t get a lot of traffic. Some good places to establish free message boards are: Yahoo! Groups (http://groups.yahoo.com/), MSN Groups (http://groups.msn.com/), and Google Groups (http://groups.google.com/grphp?hl=en&tab=wg&q=).

Encourage Your Customers to Complete Satisfaction Surveys

When a customer makes a purchase on your website or in your store, send them a short satisfaction survey - either electronic via email or hardcopy via the regular old U.S. Postal Service. You can personalize the surveys depending on what they purchased, or you can just send out a standard survey to everyone.

Customers, the same as just about everyone, like to be appreciated. Satisfaction surveys show them that you’re interested in their thoughts and that you value their patronage and their opinions. You might want to develop the surveys on your own, but you can easily have your employees circulate them. When you get them back, compile the results in a spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel.

Like just about any method of acquiring data, it’s a good idea to give your customers an incentive to fill out the survey. For example, you could enter all of the completed surveys in a weekly or monthly drawing for a free product or service or some other prize.

Beef Up Your Referral System

In a previous article, I mentioned adding a tell-a-friend option to your website. It’s a wonderful idea, but I’d like to elaborate on that just a bit. You can greatly improve your rate of referrals if you offer an incentive - are you seeing a pattern yet? Encourage your customers to send their friends and family to your website by offering a referral bonus.

This special bonus can be in the form of discounts, free services, or - what I think is most effective - cold, hard cash. Everyone likes a little more cash in their pockets, and if they like your service already, they might drive a lot of customers your way - you’ll practically have another sales rep on your team. And be sure to make a big deal about the referral to everyone who is involved - remember, customers like to be appreciated.

An easy way to generate referrals is to print simple business cards that you can give to existing customers to hand out to their friends. Include your contact information, including your website address, and include the referral bonus system you have in place - you never know how big your referral system can get if you nurture it.

Implementing These Ideas

All of these suggestions for increasing the lifetime value of your customers through customer-data acquisition are easy and inexpensive to implement, and they’ll have you reaping huge benefits in the form of a larger customer base and increased lifetime value of those customers. With just a little effort on your part you can learn a lot about what your customers think and what they want and, in turn, you’ll see your sales increase noticeably.

Climate changes due to Global warming

The third planet of our solar system and the planet where life exists, the Earth, and the place we all live in, is slowly but surely on the verge of getting destroyed. The main cause for the destruction of our planet Earth is global warming. In simple terms, global warming is the slow but steady increase in the temperature of the Earth and its atmosphere. The result of this increase in temperature of the Earth and the atmospheric temperature as a result of global warming has caused many adverse effects to the planet like melting of ice in the Polar Regions, increase in the epidemic disease occurrences, varying climatic patterns etc.

Our planet Earth is experiencing more varying climatic patterns since 1900, than the regular seasonal changes that had occurred earlier. The main factor for this conversion can be largely attributed to the activities of the man and the inception of the industrial revolution. Every human being living in this planet, knowingly or unknowingly is destroying his or her own habitat. The effluent gases that are let out of the various factories and industries all over the world has lead to an increase in the so called greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxide etc, in the atmosphere have all contributed to the greenhouse blanket on the Earth’s surface, preventing the reflection of the rays from the sun and hence causing an increase in the temperature of the Earth which inturn leads to varying climatic conditions.
