Gardening Supplies

Garden supplies are essential to the development of a good garden. They make gardening easy, and there are certain things that gardeners find indispensable.

Here are some examples:

Gloves: gloves help protect the hands from chapping or getting bruised while working in the garden. Typically, they are made of supplex nylon for toughness, as well as a feeling of softness against the skin. Sometimes gloves are made of Lycra spandex for good fit, stretch ability and comfort. Gloves are even made from fabric that breathes and promises durability. The palm is made of leather. Such high-tech gloves offer extra knuckle protection and a cloth sweat wipe. They are usually washable, do not shrink or stretch and resist hardening. For more demanding jobs, gloves are made to resist abrasion and are double stitched for protection.

Neem oil can safely be used for pest control, especially aphids and mites. It is a bio-pesticide that can be used to keep many insects out of your garden. Neem oil comes from pressing the neem tree, which is part of the indigenous flora of India and eastern Burma. It has been used effectively for several thousand years as a natural insecticide. A garlic barrier is an odorless insect repellant that can be used on lawns, flowering plants and vegetables. And, leaf mulch can be used to enrich the soil. Another soil enricher is earthworm casting. Know as black gold, this mulch it is produced by earthworms.

Pruners keep your garden trim and well groomed. Make sure they are made of high quality aluminum and built to precision with ultra hardened tool steel blades. Some pruning equipment is made to allow the gardener to trim at ground level while standing. Thorny bushes can be pruned from a safe distance. Some pruners come with a rotating cutting head with a range of 240 degrees.

Making the CEO and Other VIPs (Like You) Look At Ease On Camera

If you’ve been asked to appear on-camera for your company’s corporate, training, or sales & marketing video, there’s no need to panic. Being recorded on video tape doesn’t have to be a headache, it can be fun, exciting and rewarding.

Before the director shouts, “action,” there are several things you should know. Actually, let’s start with the word “action.” It’s part of a three command series that starts with “Roll tape” which means that the camera person starts recording. The next word is “Speed” which signifies that five seconds has passed and the video recording device is recording. Four to five seconds used to be needed prior to the scene footage for editing machines to get up to proper speed, but now it’s just to make sure everything is running correctly. “Action” comes last to signify when the scene begins, but many video production people don’t even use the word.

Some video directors prefer to say “We’re rolling” which means the machine is recording. Then there is a five second countdown, “Five, four, three. . .” The “two” and the “one” are silent. After the count of “one” the director will point at the talent to let them know they can begin speaking. The silent commands make it easier to edit, soundwise, if the talent jumps the gun and begins too quickly. “We’re still rolling” tells everyone that recording is continueing. If you here this it means that you can make comments or continue answering an interview question. Editing later will take care of transitions.

Before the video taping session there are a few things you should know. Here’s some information about the recording session:

A casual atmosphere.
Video production people dress far more casually than “normal” business people. Even the director may be wearing jeans. Production people know that they each may have to carry equipment, get down on the floor to tape down cables, or scale a ladder to place equipment or get a particular shot. Their dress is part of their casual uniform. Also, don’t be alarmed even though they exhibit a casual manner. They mean business. Each member of the crew knows their job as well as most other jobs on the shoot. The camera person you see on your production may actually be a producer or director on other presentations.

Allow time.
Allow time for the director to get your best efforts down on tape. If you only schedule thirty minutes for recording a five minute scene, you may only get one or two takes from which the final footage will be chosen. Industrial/business video directors know that your time is valuable and they’ll generally take what they can get out of your busy schedule. Clear your calendar as much as you can, the more time you allow for the presentation, however, the better you may come across on-camera. Set aside an hour or two for a good quality recording session. Allowing plenty of time for a shoot reduces tension and helps everyone do their job. If you finish sooner, then things worked out perfectly.

Interview questions.
If you’re being interviewed for your own production, you probably won’t be given the questions first. This produces a more normal and unrehearsed response on-camera. It also saves you from having to memorize lines. Too much preparation can result in a stilted interview. A good director will let you know the general field of questions, but not the actual questions themselves. This allows you to be prepared, at ease, and attentive.

Particular points you want to cover in an interview.
If you have something you want the director to cover in the interview, either send a memor prior to the shoot, or suggest it well before the actual recording. Your points will probably fit in logically with the prepared questions. By letting the director know of your needs, it can be used as an integral part of the session and not like something has been added on.

Watching yourself on-camera.
Most directors recommend that you don’t see footage of yourself during the recording session. That makes many people self-concious. They worry about how they look and how they sound. Those worries are handled by the director and the crew. Trust that you’ll look and sound good. After the session, you can look at yourself.

Adding on that one more thing.
At the end of the interview, the director may ask you if you have anything else you would like to say. This is your final chance to bring out a point that needs to be discussed on-camera.

Making mistakes.
Don’t worry about making mistakes on-camera. Tape is cheap and video footage is easily erased. You’re in control. If you or your staff recognize a gaff, ask to re-do your taped response right then. If you continue, the gaff may be forgotten until it shows up in the edited master. You always have the right to review the recorded scene or interview. You also should be able to review a rough edit for your approval.

One of the main things to remember is that you are in the hands of skilled video professionals. Their jobs are to make you look good. Relax and let them.

Free Floor Plans

“Free floor plans” is a misleading term because the best one can get is free floor planning software to help design one’s home or specific rooms in the home. There is very little such software available. One can design a room, change its proportions, place furniture and even add structural essentials such as doors and windows.

The makers of this software claim that it is very easy to use, with no learning curve, but best of all it is free. Free floor plans can be created in minutes, with absolutely no impact on one’s budget. Such software has been made so user-friendly that all one has to do is drag-and-drop in order to create a floor plan. Apparently, it is as simple as that. Such software will contain free-flowing graphics of furniture and fixtures, cabinets, wiring, plumbing, security systems, landscape basics, and even plants.

One doesn’t need to be professionally trained in any aspect of house building - not design, engineering or architecture. These products enable the user to create floor plans and more in only a matter or minutes. There are multiple templates that one can choose from in order to create the floor plan of one’s choice. There are wizards that walk the user through every step in creating the ideal floor plan.

The best part about software of this kind is that it is not only easy to use, but it can be downloaded from the Internet at no cost whatever.

Tools such as these make floor plans accessible to all. Huge payments for professional designers of these floor plans can be cut out from the estimate. Moreover, floor plans can be customized to a certain extent to suit the tastes of the user. All this makes online floor planning software a real temptation, because then your floor plan is entirely free.

Spending less getting to Goa

Since so many people are discovering the amazing culture of Goa through the music scene, many people are wondering lately about getting discount flights to India. Airfare to that country can be quite expensive, so getting a good price is often challenging, but it helps to know a few of the tricks. First of all, Goa itself is a rather small area so there aren’t many international flights. It’s cheapest to fly into Mumbai and then take a local discount airline to Goa, or you can take the train from Mumbai for even less money. The problem with this Mumbai train idea is that it takes about 12 hours to get to Goa, and unless you reserve a good sleeper cabin on the train this can feel more like 12 days. The flights are more expensive, but if you factor in the whole day you spend on the train they really are a better alterative for most people. If you are coming to India from the east then flying into Delhi is usually your best bet. From there you can take a discount airline to Goa, but forget about the train because that takes almost two full days and it’s just not worth it.

Why Skin Care Is Not Enough

Staggering amounts of money are spent daily on cosmetics and skin care products that promise to lift, firm and tighten our faces. How many of us use a product for just a few weeks before purchasing yet another product? Do we jump from item to item because we really don’t see a visible improvement and we feel disappointed in the results?

The ads are so compelling and we want to believe that we can look younger and healthier just by topically applying the latest and greatest discovery. Maybe that will happen one day but for most of us, using certain skincare items and cosmetic aids has not been helpful in the long-term because Mother Nature continues to tromp across our faces causing us to look older.

When we look at our faces in a mirror, if we’re over 40, the aging we see isn’t usually about wrinkles. The aging we see is looseness in our skin; maybe we see tired, sagging eyelids developing or a deepening nose to mouth fold or line. Our jaw probably isn’t quite as distinguished as it was a few years back as it slides downward into the neck. Maybe this face is beginning to resemble your older relatives.

Is your face puffy and would you like to see it have more contours? No skin care or cosmetic product that can do that. Even dieting cannot produce the firm, toned, youthful face you remember in your 20’s; in fact, dieting alone may deplete the fat underneath the skin making you look older than your years.

There are several avenues to address a droopy face but only one solution.

Many men and women seek plastic surgery to help correct signs of aging. Facelifts, eye lifts, and brow lifts are prevalent but they are only a temporary solution. The risk involved to one’s health and bank account is dreadful. Infection, loss of sensation, slow healing time and unexpected outcomes are just a few potential complications one can experience from surgical procedures.

Another temporary avenue available is injected fillers that plump up the skin where there is creasing or a sunken appearance. Some injectables paralyze the muscles, relaxing the skin so wrinkles are less apparent. These expensive fillers are being injected at an alarming rate and the patients seeking treatments are younger than ever. Even though these fillers may temporarily ease the look of aging, the results will not last and will need to be repeated many, many times over a lifetime. These fillers only mask aging and the user will continue to experience sagging facial muscles.

So what is the secret to stop an aging face? It’s exercise - Facial Exercise. Just like the body responds to Pilates, weight training, sit ups, etc., your face will look younger and healthier with exercise.

Just any old exercise won’t do; isometric and resistance type exercises work for your face just like exercise works for the body. Facial muscles need exercise; the motions and movements we make daily aren’t considered exercise because there is no resistance. No matter if you’re singing, yawning or yelling; these movements aren’t sufficient to create a younger looking face. The reason is that facial muscles attach to bone on one end and the other end of the muscle weaves over and under other muscles. It is only when special anchoring techniques are applied that a contraction can be caused in the muscle or muscle group; this contracting motion then allows the muscles to become fuller, plumper and more youthfully positioned. This action lifts the face.

Imagine applying these techniques for a few weeks and looking 10-15 years younger without invasive or costly procedures. You create the look of a face lift and save a ton of money with no risk to your health or your savings. You can keep the aging process in abeyance, feel revitalized, and look healthier and younger just by exercising your face a few minutes each day.

A 21″ LCD TV - a Versatile Mid-Range Size

Some consumers consider a 21″ LCD TV to be the perfect size: for
TV viewing and for use as a computer monitor. Some take it one
step further: they integrate their 21″ LCD TV with a home
theater PC. It’s easier than you think, and a home theater PC
setup lets you access any media files like digital image files,
audio files, and videos. You can also watch your favorite
television shows or DVDs, and you can even use the 21″ LCD TV as
a computer monitor. It’s no surprise, then, that some consumers
feel a 21″ LCD TV is one of the most versatile screen sizes
available.

If you watch digital TV on your 21″ LCD TV, you could be already
taking advantage of the possibilities of Digital Video Recorders
(DVR) or TiVo. You can go one step farther; integrating your 21″
LCD TV with a home theater PC setup is the ultimate in
versatility. And it’s not that hard - here are a few ways
available to you.

1. Buy a PC with the Media Center version of Windows XP and make
sure it has a TV tuner card capable of capturing digital signals
from your cable or satellite box. Once it’s installed, it works
just like a DVR. You won’t need to buy a high-end PC to
integrate with your 21″ LCD TV if you just want to record and
play shows and movies - if you also want to play
graphics-intensive video games, you may need a more expensive PC
with greater graphics capability. Just make sure you get plenty
of memory.

2. Upgrade your PC. You can buy a copy of Microsoft’s operating
system with Media Center. Frequently it comes bundled with a TV
tuner card you’ll also need. If you have decent computer skills
you can handle the installation fairly easily and your 21″ LCD
TV home theater PC setup will be running in no time.

3. If you don’t want to upgrade to a new operating system, a
number of software companies produce applications that perform
the same chores as Media Center does. A few are available as
freeware, but the features they offer tend to be limited. You’ll
still need to factor in the cost of a TV tuner card - a TV tuner
card won’t be included with the freeware. Once you’ve decided
how to set up your computer, you can integrate it into your home
theater system so your 21″ LCD TV can handle the video feed you
send to it. A 21″ unit is ideal for this purpose; sets that are
larger sometimes deliver reduced image quality when the TV
signal is sent through the computer.

How you send the signal to your TV is the main hurdle to
overcome. There are many different audio and video options for
joining the two; the method you choose will obviously depend on
the inputs and outputs available on both your PC and your TV.
Older, standard-definition LCD TVs will have, at a minimum, a
composite-video connection (a yellow video connection that’s
usually accompanied by red and white stereo audio jacks).
Hopefully, it will also provide an S-Video port. Newer 21″ LCD
TVs should provide component inputs, and more advanced 21″ LCD
TVs that are HDTV capable will supply DVI or HDMI inputs. If you
haven’t purchased a 21″ LCD TV yet, try to find a model with DVI
or HDMI inputs.

Once your computer is connected to your 21″ TV you can use Media
Center to keep track of your media files and handle your DVR
recording needs. If you want to record TV without using Media
Center, similar products on the market can do the job. For
example, SnapStream’s Beyond TV comes bundled with many TV tuner
cards, so if you’re building a home theater or upgrading a
machine you already own, you might end up with a copy by
default. And you can take a further step and add the Beyond
Media program for organizing photo, music, and other media
files, and it does pretty much everything Media Center does.
Beyond TV doesn’t support every TV tuner card on the market, so
check the hardware specs for your 21″ LCD TV before you install
it.

Even if you have no interest in recording TV programs, you can
still use programs like Windows Media Player, iTunes, and
PowerDVD to manage your preexisting media library using software
you already have.

Whichever option you choose, make sure you have plenty of hard
disk space; once you start recording television programs or
watching your home videos on your 21″ LCD TV, you’ll find you
need all the space you can get. And due to its increased
versatility, you’ll find your 21″ LCD TV is an even bigger part
of your home entertainment system.

A Cookie Assembly Line: Efficient Cookie Baking for Busy Cooks

As a busy working mother, I’m short on time, especially during the holidays, but baking Christmas cookies is a family tradition I’m unwilling to give up. Over the years, I’ve come up with many ways to make the process of baking a large variety of cookies go much smoother and take less time out of my busy life. You may want to start by checking out my 6-day program for hassle-free Christmas cookie baking ( http://www.christmascookiesareforgiving.com/hassle-free.php ). In addition to the 6-step method, I’ve found an efficient way to prepare a large variety of cookie dough with minimum fuss by setting up a cookie assembly line. The best part about this process is that you can make 12 different batches of cookies and only have to wash the dishes once!

This process assumes that you have already chosen your recipes and gone grocery shopping. You will want to use your longest available expanse of countertop for this. My assembly line turns two corners as it winds around my small kitchen, but that is fine.

You may need to make some adjustments depending on your individual recipes, but for most recipes, you can set up your assembly line like so:

Flour Line:

-Large mixing bowl
-Measuring cups and spoons
-Fork for stirring
-Flour
-Baking powder and baking soda
-Salt
-Cocoa powder
-Spices
-Any other dry ingredients that are added to the flour in your recipes

Butter Line

-Another large mixing bowl (or the bowl from your stand mixer)
-A second set of measuring cups and spoons
-Electric mixer
-Wooden spoon
-Rubber spatula
-Butter, shortening, margarine and/or cream cheese
-Sugar (white and brown)
-Eggs
-Vanilla and other extracts
-Chunks such as raisins, nuts, chocolate chips
-Rolled oats
-Any other ingredients that are added to the butter and eggs in your recipes
-Plastic wrap
-Felt-tip marker

To avoid transferring flavors from one recipe to another, you will start with basic recipes that have no spices, chocolate, or other strongly flavored ingredients. Starting with your first recipe, go down the line measuring out the amount of flour, baking powder/soda and salt into one bowl. Then, combine the butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla in your larger bowl as directed. Gradually stir the flour mixture into the butter mixture. After that, stir in any chunks.

Next, scrape down the edges of the mixing bowl so that it’s fairly clean, shape the dough into a ball, and wrap it in plastic wrap. Identify the recipe by writing its name on the plastic wrap with a felt-tip marker, and refrigerate it. If it is a slice-and-bake refrigerator cookie, form it into a log instead of a ball, according to the directions in your recipe. If you plan to bake much later, you can even freeze the dough. Most cookie doughs freeze very well. Defrost at room temperature while still wrapped in plastic wrap, and unwrap only when dough is thoroughly defrosted. Otherwise condensation could add too much moisture to your dough.

When your first batch of dough is prepared, wrapped, and stored in the refrigerator or freezer, return to the beginning of your assembly line, without washing your dishes, and begin preparing the next batch of dough. When you have prepared all the recipes that contain no spices or cocoa, move on to the recipes that contain cocoa, and finally those that contain spices. This way, you will only have to do dishes once at the end of the process, and you will have several different kinds of dough waiting to be baked.

When all your dough is prepared, then you can finally put away all your ingredients, clean up the kitchen, and do your dishes. Now if you plan to finish your baking today, you’ll have lots of space for rolling out your dough or setting out your cooling racks. If you plan to bake another day, you’re done!

Favorite Hobbies - Camping

One very popular hobby for many people is camping. I have gone
camping many times throughout my life, in rain or snow, desert
or forest. I have also camped on the banks of rivers, in snow
caves, and in cabins. No matter where you go camping, your
camping necessities may change a little, but the basics remain
the same. You will need to stay warm. You will need shelter. You
will need food to eat and a means to cook it.

The only places I have gone camping are in Utah, but there is
such diversity in Utah’s climate and landscape, that I
experienced a variety of different camping experiences. A
camping hobby is great
in Utah and other outdoor states. As I boy scout, I used to go
on the Klondike every year. This was a winter campout in the
Utah Mountains. It would get freezing up there at night. A
couple of times when I went, I slept in a tent. The tent was
freezing. A nice sleeping bag kept me warm, but the air was too
cold to breathe. By morning my lungs felt like they had sand in
them. My scout leader, another scout, and I got up a little
early to make a fire, because we were so cold. The scout kept
complaining about how his feet hurt all morning, until the sun
came up and then we realized he had his boots on the wrong feet.
I think every year that I went to the Klondike, I fell through
the ice on the lake and got wet. The warmest I have been at the
Klondike was when I built a snow cave to live in. You just make
a large pile of snow and pack it down. Then you dig out the
inside large enough for a couple people to sleep in there. If
you just have a candle, it will stay very warm inside the cave.
The snow acts as insulation to the cold air outside. Snowcaving
should definitely be added to your camping hobbies list.

I have camped in the high Uintah Mountains of Utah. My
grandparents have a cabin up there that we have stayed in often.
Now that I am older, I am a much bigger fan of cabin camping.
You can just light the wood burning stove to keep the whole
cabin warm. We had an electric generator to have electricity in
the cabin. It might not sound much like camping to some people.
We were up in the mountains alone though, and cooked our food on
a campfire and got our water from a spring.

I have also camped in other areas of the High Uintah Mountains,
without a cabin. Once I went on a fifty mile hike through the
mountains. It took us five days going ten miles a day. We had to
carry our tents, sleeping bags and all of the necessary supplies
for food and other things, through the mountains for five days.
Which reminds me; do not ever let your mom pack your backpack if
you are going on a trip like that, unless you want to carry
whole boxes of cereal and other things that are not useful on a
long hike. When I hiked to King’s Peak, the highest peak in
Utah, my mom packed my backpack and once I got to our base camp,
I found in my pack a large iron skillet to cook on that weighed
a ton, a whole loaf of bread, a large jar of jelly and a large
jar of peanut butter. To say the least, I was not a happy camper
after I realized I had just lugged a cast iron frying pan up the
mountain.

I have also camped in the deserts of Southern Utah. There is no
end to the scenery and variety of landscape there, from arches
to the Grand Canyon along with Goblin Valley to Lake Powell.
There are also the large canyons with the Green River and the
Colorado River carving through them. Find your camping gear at
your online hobby store

The Truth About Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome that is composed of many different symptoms. The primary symptom is pain and tenderness in multiple areas of the body. This is often linked to fatigue, sleep disorders, digestive problems, and depression. Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are considered to be overlapping disorders which many consider to actually be the same illness.

Many people consider these conditions to be psychosomatic in origin because people suffering from these conditions can look healthy and normal from the outside, and yet complain of so many different symptoms. These symptoms can include mental symptoms such as brain fog, forgetfulness, spaciness, depression, moodswings, anger, and extremes in behavior. Unfortunately, as a result many people with this disease are viewed with skepticism by medical practitioners and lay people alike and are often branded as hypochondriacs.

Another view of CFS and fibromyalgia is that the conditions are auto-immune diseases which are triggered by an infection. Most doctors take the view that Epstein-Barr virus, which is the virus that causes mononucleosis, is the primary culprit. This is rather doubtful, in my opinion, since most of the population is exposed to this virus early on in life without this virus triggering any serious long-term complications.

Then there is a new theory emerging among doctors who have used long-term antibiotic therapy to treat these conditions that fibromyalgia and CFS are not simply auto-immune diseases that are triggered by infections, but that the symptoms are signs of a chronic ongoing infectious disease process in the body. These doctors claim to have had excellent results in the treatment of these syndromes using long-term antibiotics, often in very high dosages. They have also had very good results with treating other so called “auto-immune diseases” with long term antibiotic therapy. Often, patients suffering from fibromyalgia, CFS, and other diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis experience complete remissions after a long course of antibiotics.

The positive results that these patients are experiencing implies that many auto-immune diseases may actually be chronic undiagnosed bacterial infections. There are a number of pathogens that are not easily detected in the body through standard diagnostic procedures and that are not easily killed off through a short course of treatment. These pathogens may be involved in fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. There is a new theory that chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia may be related to chronic mycobacterial infections.

It is also possible that many of these people actually suffer from Lyme Disease which has never been diagnosed due to the lack of proper testing. Lyme Disease is the fastest growing infectious disease in this country next to AIDS. Cases have been found in all of the lower forty-eight states. Lyme Disease is cause by a spirochetal bacteria called borellia burgdorferi. Borellia burgdorferi is a very resilient and adaptable organism. Doctors with clinical experience in the treatment of this disease have noted that certain antibiotics work for certain forms that the bacteria can take, but not for others. The spirochete can take a cyst form where most antibiotics cannot reach it. It also hides in the joints of the body, in areas of poor circulation, and it may hide within the cells of the immune system.

The Center for Disease Control estimates that only one in ten Lyme Disease patients are ever properly diagnosed. The CDC also estimates that it takes an average of thirteen doctors and an average of two years for these people to be properly diagnosed. By the time the diagnosis is made, the disease can be quite entrenched in the body. There are also often many co-infections in Lyme Disease patients that may cause a host of other complications. Nevertheless, since the disease and its associated co-infections are caused by bacterial organisms, and these organisms can be killed, there is hope for recovery.

Lyme Disease can cause all of the many symptoms that people with fibromyalgia and CFS suffer from. It can cause achy muscles and joints, depression, fatigue, migraine headaches, tingling nerve sensations, insomnia, sleepiness, digestive problems, poor circulation, blurry vision, hearing irregularities, mental problems, weak limbs, pain in the rib cage, liver enzyme irregularities, hypothyroidism, an increased tendency for red blood cells to clump together, swollen lymph nodes, and much more. The irregularities in liver function may be responsible for the chemical sensitivities that many people with fibromyalgia and CFS experience. Because the organism that causes the disease is often not in the bloodstream, it is difficult to diagnose the disease through testing. Doctors who are familiar with the disease tend to base their diagnosis mainly on the clinical symptoms the patient presents and the risk factors that the patient has had exposure to, using testing as only a secondary measure for making a diagnosis.

According to the doctors who use it, long-term antibiotic therapy may help people who suffer from fibromyalgia, CFS, Lyme Disease, and many other “auto-immune diseases”. Nevertheless, there can be serious side effects from this type of therapy. Antibiotics used a long period of time can cause kidney and liver damage. They can cause gallbladder problems. Many people also cannot tolerate oral antibiotics well because of the strain on their digestive system.

There are many alternative health options that can complement treatment with antibiotics and which may reduce side effects, and there are many natural remedies that have antibiotic and immune-enhancing properties of their own, for those who prefer to take a purely natural route.

Acupuncture may help to improve blood circulation and oxygenation to various areas of the body, enhancing the immune system’s ability to fight off infections. The increase in oxygenation can also create an inhospitable situation for bacteria that prefer a low oxygen environment. It also can stimulate the body to release natural pain relieving opiates into the body. The improvement in blood circulation may also help to increase body temperature in hands and feet and other areas of the body that tend to get cold easily. These are often areas of the body where bacteria, such as borellia burgdorferi, which prefer a low body temperature, may tend to congregate. Acupuncture can be used in conjunction with antibiotic therapy. It may help to improve the efficacy of antibiotic therapy by improving circulation.

According to Chinese research, there are many Chinese herbs that have immune enhancing and antibacterial properties. There are also many Chinese herbs that can help the various symptomatic aspects of fibromyalgia and CFS. Some herbs such as astragalus and schizandra can improve the body’s ability to handle stress and can boost immunity. Other herbs such as coptis and scutellaria have anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The Chinese herb, pseudoginseng, or san qi, can help promote blood circulation and is an extremely helpful herb for people with these conditions. It also improves the penetration, absorption, and efficacy of other remedies that are used.

Zyzyphus seed may help with sleep problems and anxiety. Bupleurum root may help relieve the moodswings and emotional aspects of fibromyalgia. The various types of ginseng can help to improve one’s energy level. Pseudoginseng, frankincense, and myrrh can help stimulate blood circulation and may help with symptoms of muscle weakness and joint pain due to poor circulation. Walnuts, gingko biloba, frankincense, gotu kola, and fo-ti may all help with the brain fog and cognitive difficulties that many people with fibromyalgia and CFS experience. Codonopsis, atractylodes, mint, and citrus peel may all help with digestive problems. Chinese herbs are used together in herbal formulas that are individualized to address the pattern of disharmony that the person presents. They are generally not used separately on a symptom by symptom basis.

For Lyme Disease, a few different Chinese herbs stand out for their potential usefulness. Smilax (tu fu ling), coptis (huang lian), garlic (da suan), houttuynia (yu xing cao), and teasel root (xu duan) are all herbs that appear to help to treat Lyme disease in different ways. Some of them have antibacterial properties, some strengthen the body generally, and some improve circulation. Prunella vulgaris, scrophularia, and kelp can help to reduce the incidence of enlarged lymph nodes, cysts, and pseudo-tumors that are commonly found in people with Lyme. Chinese herbal formulas such as Huang Lian Jie Du Tang, Ge Xia Zhu Yu Tang, and Xiao Fu Zhu Yu Tang can be helpful. Formulas designed to clear heat, move qi and blood, tonify yang qi, and transform dampness can all be helpful for different patients depending on the pattern of disharmony they present. After a long period of illness or for patients with emaciation and insomnia it may be necessary to nourish yin as well. People with a babesial co-infection, an infection with symptoms similar to malaria, generally need heat to be cleared from the shaoyang channel and need nourishing of yin. Artemisia can be a useful herb for babesia. It has been shown to have anti-malarial properties in China and Vietnam. For people with Lyme Disease who have nerve problems, it may also be necessary to clear liver wind.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has been used to treat people with Lyme Disease. Many have experienced good results and there is ongoing scientific research at the moment concerning its efficacy. The bacteria that causes Lyme Disease prefers an oxygen deprived environment. Its presence in the body appears to increase coagulation of blood and decrease circulation. It may thereby create the oxygen deprived environment that it prefers. This is great for the bacteria but can be the source of much of the difficulty that a person with this disease experiences. Many of the symptoms that people with Lyme disease, CFS, or fibromyalgia complain of are similar to symptoms that people experience from altitude sickness, which is caused by oxygen deprivation at high altitudes. The fatigue, the mental difficulties, the sleepiness, the feeling of having a ton of bricks attached to one’s limbs are all similar to symptoms that people with altitude sickness experience. It makes sense to me that creating an oxygen-rich environment could potentially be very helpful. It is important for testing for co-infections before beginning this process, because there are other bacteria that could be present that prefer a high oxygen environment, complicating the picture. There are potential side effects as well such as nearsightedness.

Colloidal silver is supplement that may have broad-spectrum antibiotic properties. Its proponents claim that it can aid all sorts of conditions from asthma to rheumatoid arthritis. It did appear to help my fatigue quite a bit at the early stages of my Lyme disease. There is the possibility that excessive use can cause a condition called argyria, which is a permanent bluish discoloration of the skin, although many people have huge quantities of colloidal silver with no problems at all. It is also helpful to take an acidophilus supplement while using this supplement in order to replace the good bacteria in your intestines and prevent problems with candida. Large amounts may be required to have an impact on Lyme Disease. It is possible to buy a colloidal silver generator and make your own colloidal silver at home. This is much cheaper than buying it on a regular basis at the health food store, but care must be taken to make it properly.

Aromatherapy is one of the most promising holistic therapies for conditions such as fibromyalgia, CFS, and Lyme Disease, in my opinion. The essential oils are concentrated versions of the volatile components found in herbs. It can take many pounds of plant matter to make an ounce of essential oil. For the most precious oil, made from the Bulgarian rose, it can take a ton of rose petals to make a pound of oil. Most of the oils have antiseptic and antibacterial properties. Many of them stimulate the immune system and trigger increased production of white blood cells. The oils also improve oxygenation of the body’s tissues and promote detoxification. They may have a chelating effect, which means that they may assist in carrying toxins such as heavy metals out of the body. Some oils such as lavender can be sedative and aid with sleep and reduce anxiety. Oil of oregano, which is a popular supplement found in health food stores is essential oil of oregano diluted in vegetable oil. It is almost always necessary to dilute the oils before using them because they are so concentrated. Interestingly, many people with CFS, Lyme Disease, and fibromyalgia are likely to find that some of their symptoms worsen when inhaling the fragrance of the oils. This is often a detoxification reaction. People with Lyme Disease generally seem to derive greatest benefits from stronger dilutions of essential oil than most aromatherapists typically use. It is important to use care when the oils are utilized in this manner. One should reduce the amount used if there is nausea or discontinue use if there is any allergic reaction. People with these diseases may discover that much of their fatigue, muscle weakness, mental fogginess, and pain can be significantly reduced with regular application of the oils. The oils can be used diluted in vegetable oil for massage of affected areas of the body, and they can be used by the drop in one’s bath water. They can also be absorbed into the bloodstream via the lungs simply by inhaling their fragrance. The oils also penetrate the blood-brain barrier and may be helpful for neurological issues due to infections or other reasons. Oil of oregano taken internally as directed can also be helpful in the treatment of Lyme Disease.

Massage can improve oxygenation of body tissues and improve blood circulation as well as reduce pain. If a person has fibromyalgia or CFS due to an infectious disease process, or a person has Lyme Disease, massage should only be used in combination with a therapy that is antibacterial in nature. Otherwise, it is likely to stir up dormant bacteria and stir up symptoms instead of providing symptom relief. When massage is used in combination with a therapy that is antibiotic in nature, it may improve the efficacy of that therapy by bringing bacteria out of hiding in order to be killed. Deep tissue massage may improve the efficacy of treatment with antibiotics, with herbs, with aromatherapy, or with heat. Used on its own, though, it may stir up latent problems in people with these conditions.

Heat can be helpful for treating Lyme Disease because the bacteria appears to prefer a low body temperature and is vulnerable to high heat. There are many different sources of heat that can be used to treat this condition. Heat can also be helpful for people with fibromyalgia and CFS who may actually have undiagnosed cases of Lyme Disease. People usually feel a worsening of symptoms before they feel an improvement with the use of heat. My personal theory is that this is because the heat stirs up the bacteria before it kills it off or triggers the immune system to kill the bacteria off. This is speculative on my part. The use of saunas can be very useful. A far infrared heat lamp can be used on problem areas. Hot baths taken for forty minutes at 102-104 degrees Fahrenheit have been shown to enhance immune system response in people with infectious diseases and auto-immune disorders in a research study done at Bastyr University. A Chinese therapy called moxibustion can also be useful in warming problem areas. I do not recommend the use of cold packs or ice for pain in people with Lyme Disease, fibromyalgia, or CFS as these therapies reduce circulation to areas where circulation is likely to already be compromised. Also, the bacteria that causes Lyme Disease appears to prefer a cool environment, so cold therapy may cause real problems in people with this condition.

In spite of the fatigue that people with fibromyalgia, CFS, and Lyme Disease may feel, a certain amount of exercise can be very beneficial if they are up to the challenge. It is important not to overexert oneself, but a brisk walk or other exercise that gets one’s heart pumping can be helpful. Again, exercise can be helpful because it can improve circulation in the body, and improve oxygenation of the body’s tissues. Exercises such as stretching and yoga that help to improve flexibility and loosen muscles can also be helpful. Hot yoga, where yoga is done in a room where the heat is cranked up can be particularly helpful because it combines exercise with heat therapy. It is important not to push too hard when doing exercise. The point is to improve your health, and not to wipe yourself out more.

Magnesium appears to be a useful supplement for people with these conditions. Many people report an improvement in their muscle pain when taking a magnesium supplement on a regular basis. It is important to reduce intake of sugar, dairy products and bread while increasing intake of green vegetables. Spirulina can be a useful addition to your health regimen as it is both nourishing and detoxifying. It may also be helpful to reduce consumption of tomatoes as they seem to encourage acidity in the body. Flax seed oil has an anti-inflammatory effect that can be very helpful. Alpha-lipoic acid is a helpful anti-oxidant. It may help nerve function and improve liver function.

As you can see, fibromyalgia, CFS, and Lyme Disease are complex ailments, but there are many promising therapies that people with these conditions are likely to find helpful.
