We should be familiar with the BASIC hallmarks mentioned on the website. It might pay you to read them again, just to bring you up to speed and ensure you have grasped the principles. If you have not yet had the chance to read them please go to the website listed below.

Let’s quickly remind ourselves where we should be regarding Hallmarks.

The first three marks mentioned before were:

1: The Makers mark

2: The Assay Office mark

3: The Quality mark

And that brings us to the last mark…

4: The Date stamp.

Please note that more mistakes are made with this mark than any other.

This is caused by two reasons.

The first: because 26 letters can only be used for 26 years (a different one for each year, although they did use italics or capitals for a change). So in order to extend their use, they changed the shape of the stamp mark itself.

One series of 26 years may use a Shield shape, while the next 26 years may use a square shape with the corners trimmed off. Go figure?

And second: because humans being humans, (and contrary to common belief, Jewelers are Human), a manufacturer who lived in Birmingham had to use one shape of stamp, while jewelers in London had to use another shape.

All very good, you say, until a jeweler who USED to live in London went to Birmingham to work and took all his old tools and stamps with him, and couldn’t be bothered (they cost money) to buy a new set. So he used his old set….

Ahhh… Life is never simple.

However; and in general terms, if all else fails use common sense.

As London was the Largest and most common stamp, you may find a Birmingham mark with a slightly wrong date stamp, although the date YEAR mark should be the same.

By using all of the marks together and taking into account the wear and look of the item - plus what it is, you should get fairly close to accurate.

If your still not sure, get a written valuation done with your local professional Jewelry Appraiser, and use that piece of paper as fact.

Even though YOU know, they are going through the same process of ‘Dating’ it’s still a little confusing. Plus it’s not the only form of Dating I get confused with…? And my plastic eyeglass doesn’t help at all….

Look out for these tips next time you’re spying with your eyeglass.

HALLMARKING TIPS #1:

In Circa 1821 the Leopard’s Head Hallmark became ‘Uncrowned’
In Circa 1891 Queen Victoria’s head was no longer used in Hallmarking.
The major point is to use ALL of the Hallmarks, not just the date letter.
Also check the style of an item, as this could give a clue to the period.

HALLMARKING TIPS #2:

As a general rule, Hallmarks should be assessed by going from the ‘Big Picture’ to the ‘Small Picture’ or the particular date in question.

For example: Date the article within a 25 year time span first, as this can be calculated from the overall ‘SHAPE’ or style of the stamp mark (Shield or Oval etc). Then go to the actual ‘Year’ stamp mark.

Remember, these can sometimes be wrong, but if we are in the ballpark, so to speak, we won’t be too far out.

It is interesting to note that the expression ‘Circa’ or ‘c’ actually means ‘around’…

Silver imported into England carried the ‘F’ mark (for Foreign) between 1883 - 1904.

HALLMARKING TIPS #3:

It is helpful if we can remember some of the more important changes to Hallmarking and just how that effected Quality.

For example:
The quality of Hallmarked Gold can give us a clue regarding its age.
Items of 22ct stamped with the ‘Lion passant’ were made up to 1844.
After that date items were stamped 22ct with a ‘Crown’ hallmark.

HALLMARKING TIPS #4:

UKHM stands for the United Kingdom Hall Marks and has been in existence since 1300. Yes… 1300!

The basic marks are:

The Assay Mark which indicated the ‘Guarantee of Quality’.

The Origin Mark which shows WHERE it was Assayed.

The Duty Mark to confirm ‘Tax’ had been paid.

The Maker’s Mark to indicate the company or individual who made the item.

The Date Mark based on the letters of the Alphabet, changing each year.

The Assay year was NOT a Calendar year as it began (as for London) in May. That means it covered TWO Calendar years.

Mention reciprocal linking on any internet marketing forum and you will be sure to get a barrage of heated replies. There is a continual debate about the advantages and disadvantages involved in reciprocal linking and both sides make convincing statements. So, should you or should you not get involved in reciprocal linking? Ultimately, the decision is yours but here are some guidelines:

1. The main goal of any linking strategy is to get more traffic to a website. Reciprocal linking can work for or against you in this matter depending on the site that you exchange links with. If you exchange links with sites that receive a lot of traffic, some of that traffic may be diverted to your site. On the other hand, if you exchange links with a low traffic site, you may divert some of your traffic to the other site without seeing a similar return. The solution is to exchange reciprocal links with a site with a page rank no lower than one level below yours and to try to exchange links with many sites with a higher page rank. Ideally, you would seek to exchange links with sites that have at least a PR 4.

2. Don’t exchange links with everybody that asks. What advantage is there in exchanging links with a site that sells wedding favors when your site is about dog training? Anyone that visits the wedding favor site will be looking for information concerning weddings, not dog training, and very few will click on your link regardless of how high the page rank is for the wedding site. The key here is to exchange links only with sites that are relevant to your site or to your keywords.

3. Avoid exchanging links with sites that have a huge link directory. If your site is listed on page 43 in your category of another site’s link directory, few people will ever see your link. Although a link will be generated to your site for the search engines, you will not receive much traffic from the link exchange. Try to exchange links with sites where your link will be displayed on the first, or at the most, the second page of another site’s link directory.

4. Build online relationships. Exchanging links with other relevant websites is a great way to start building partnerships with other website owners and may open the door for future joint venture requests.

5. Build your link popularity. Most search engines view sites that have many links to them as being important. So, the more sites that link to your site, the higher your site might rank. But again, make sure that all reciprocal links are relevant to your site or the search engines will penalize you.

If you do decide to get involved in reciprocal linking, join only well established link exchanges that allow you to approve or disapprove the link. Avoid link farms or link exchanges that will automatically exchange your link with their entire database regardless of the relevancy to your website.

The optimum way to set up a link page is to enter all links manually. Yes, it is time consuming but when you are starting out, this is the best way to do it.

You would first need to set up a page on your website just for your link categories. You can call this page anything you like such as Links, My Partners, Link Partners, My Link Partners, etc. Set up this page with the major categories and subcategories that are relevant to your site. Then, set up a page for each subcategory that will contain the actual links. Test to be sure that whenever anyone clicks on a subcategory that they are taken to the appropriate link page.

Prepare a short 3 - 5 line ad about your website or your product and include the URL to your website. This should be in HTML code for easy uploading. Each linking company has their own procedure, but generally, each time you ask to exchange links, you’ll need to copy and paste the other website’s HTML code onto your link page under the correct category and subcategory. You will then need to upload the updated page to your website.

Once this is done, let the other website know on which of your pages they can find their link. If the other website owner approves the link exchange, they should add your link to their link page and inform you on exactly what page you can find it.

Check to make sure that your link has been added to their site. If they have not added your link, you have the option of contacting the website owner as to why or of removing their link from your site.

I was reading an article today and my light bulb finally went on - Blam! I really got how cool the Apple and Intel deal is…

I spend a fair amount of my time working with startups and I am convinced that 95% of innovation occurs in small companies. Only a small percentage of these fledgling companies beat the odds and makes their “cool” idea into a reality. They used to go public but now they mostly get snapped up by bigger companies that are higher up the food chain.

Large companies spend a lot less on research than they did in years past. What little they do invest, they spend on making incremental improvements to existing products. They spend very little on research that is capable of producing major breakthrough results.

I almost forgot that big companies can still put together smart deals that can rock our world. I think that Apple and Intel did just that two years ago.

The breakthrough is not the recently released Mac that now has “Intel inside”, it is the next generation iPod.

The devices that are going to rock your world are the “Mobile Me” devices from Apple. “Mobile Me” is a new trademark that I think, Apple will use to describe new handheld devices that give you almost everything you want, all the time, wherever you want it.

I know what you want is a lot! And Apple is going to give it to you. When they do, I think you will reward Apple with even bigger buckets of your dollars. Why not? If they deliver you a phone + music + email + video + browsing + fast broadband that is easy to use and easy to update; and all for under $500.

Lets look at what Apple and Intel have accomplished:. Music Player: very well done. Video Player: good start, needs more pixels Player Content: iTunes is well done, just needs a subscription plan Cell Phone: weak start, Apple not committed yet, but Intel has can change that Browsing/Email: not yet an iPod feature, but consider the Intel influence. Mobile Broadband: Intel is betting the ranch on Wi-Fi and WiMAX

Intel is clearly betting it’s future growth on wireless networking. It blew billions on phone chips with little to show for it, then turned to wireless networking with a passion. A few months ago Intel launched a it’s Digital Communities Initiative, to help cities across the globe build their own wireless broadband networks. Intel is investing money and energy to encourage the spread of Wi-Fi and WiMAX.

While city-wide hotspots are a nice idea for laptop users, their real appeal is to users of a new generation of wireless device users. But wireless networking is based on open standard that is a direct competitor to proprietary cell phone networks. Who is going to build the cool new devices that need the wireless network? Why Apple, of course.

The chip maker can forget about Motorola, Samsung, Erickson, and Nokia competing with their own cell phones. That made Apple look awful good; a perfect choice for building device that really takes advantage of the new WiMAX features.

With the next-gen iPod, you will be able to move away from the download model and subscribe to real time media and entertainment. Forget satellite radio, take your iPod to the park and watch a movie, or listen to music feeds.

Since you are plugged into the net, place all the calls that you like call - after all it’s free. It’s all part of the basic service. If you feel creative, use the integrated camera to video conference with a friend or capture some scenes while you are on vacation to share with your family back home. “Hey honey, look where I did today…. nah, I’m alright, really”.

If you think text blogs are cool, you will love the new generation of real time video iPod blogs. When news breaks you’ll have lots of on scene video blog to choose from to track the breaking news.

Apple + Intel may be big but “Mobile Me” will be truly cool and very disruptive. I know they can make the technology work, lets see if they start spending to defeat the cell phone lobby and get politicians to back municipal WiMAX networks.

Unfortunately for Nokia the 8800 Arte faces really stiff competition meaning it is relatively easy to get a fantastic deal on this handset.

Gaming laptops used to only be obtainable from certain manufacturers. Before the small number of sales was made up by the profit margins. They were the laptop computers you dreamed of but were out of your reach. They were like the show piece of what was capable with laptop computer technology, the best laptop computers in existence. I once received a phone call from a distraught parent, “My fourteen-year-old son lies non-stop about everything. It’s so bad that if he keeps this up, we’ve threatened to send him to boot camp!” I thought, “That must be some serious lying!” The teen had been adopted at the age of two, some early trauma was present. The father was a retired Vietnam veteran, which is typically an indicator at the very least, of exposure to a traumatic environment. Nothing significant stood out concerning the mother’s history. As well as lying, the child had been skipping class and wrestling practice; I gave the parent’s three suggestions to follow for the next two weeks:

1. Make sure that your son is attending all of his classes daily. Call the teachers, e-mail them, do whatever you must to ensure he is attending. If he is not, then we must focus on this issue first. Let him quit wrestling if wants to. Continuing to wrestle and being stressed out is not worth the positives that might be gained at this time. (This topic alone is fodder for an entire article!)

2. Spend 20 minutes of uninterrupted time with your son every evening, allowing him to talk about anything he would like. Turn off the television and put down the newspaper, just listen to what he’s talking about.

3. The main part of the Lying Solution: When he lies, take several deep breaths. Look at him with sorrow in your eyes because you now see the fear driving the lie. Ignore the Lie, but Don’t Ignore Him — say, “Son, I love you. You are not ever going anywhere, and everything is going to be alright. Do you understand?” Once he nods in agreement, turn and walk away. Never mention the lie. Wait one hour. Once you are calm, go back to him. Interrupt whatever he is doing. Take him by the hand, look him in the eyes and say, “Son, you know I love you right? I love you very much. When you tell me a lie, it really scares me. It hurts me as well, because it tells me that you don’t trust me. Then I worry that I can’t keep you safe. I need you to know that you can trust me and everything is going to be okay. Do you understand?” Once the child nods his head in belief, you have officially completed the Three Step Lying Solution.

Telling the truth is very difficult. If telling the truth was an easy thing there would be few incidences of lying. When an individual, unconsciously, is fearful of being rejected, abandoned, ridiculed, or shamed, the prospect of honesty becomes daunting. To continue our story, following two weeks, I had not heard back from the parents. Finally, after six weeks I received a phone call, it was from the mother. She exclaimed, “Hello, Dr. Post, its Sharon from California. I know it has been longer than two weeks, but you won’t believe it, my son has made a complete turnaround! In fact, he has even gotten a job at the local swimming pool. Hallelujah.” The recommendations were not magical. What is magical is when parents are able to see things differently. Two of the recommendations alone: Spending 20 minutes uninterrupted with their son each evening and telling him he’s never going anywhere, could have made a significant difference by themselves. In the United States, the average amount of quality parent-child time is 13 minutes! They almost doubled that. In addition, John Bowlby, the father of attachment theory, stated that the threat of loss is equal to loss itself. In other words, you should never threaten to send a child away because of their behavior. If so, you are going to create more fear, which will only trigger the rejection they’ve already experienced. This will lead to depression, anger, and the need to lie better. Thousands of parents have utilized The Three Step Lying Solution effectively. More than a handful of parents have reported using it just one time and their children have not told a lie since. Though it is simple, simple does not mean easy. It can be difficult to put into place, but it is very effective once you finally use it.

When fuel prices were low, it was often difficult to justify the upfront investment of money required to install photovoltaic equipment, solar water heaters and similar equipment.
